Certainly not as bad as Horse Armor, but...

The Orrey is one of the two initial DLC packs announced for Oblivion, with the promise of being able to see inside the locked door at the arcane university and go on some sort of adventure. It certainly sounded better than horse armor, which to this day is one of the better examples of overpriced and unneeded downloadable content. After all, The Orrey must be way better than Horse Armor, right?

In actuality, The Orrey is a bland 15-minute quest that consists entirely of going to random bandit camps, killing everyone there, and repeating until the quest is done, at which point the "reward" is a once-a-day power that increases one stat by 20 but also decreases another by the same amount based on the phases of the moon. While not totally worthless, the reward is too circumstantial and bland to make The Orrey be worth downloading. Ignore it almost on the same level as horse armor.

Orrery is a hard word to pronounce (and write).

I think the orrery itself is beautiful; a pic of that was what I first had as my page background, but it doesn't sound like there's much to this.  You'd think it wouldn't have been to hard to add a string of missions.  But I guess this was the early days of big-time DLC.

@ahoodedfigure: This was before people really understood what really to do with downloadable content in games, being the start of a new console generation. In reality, there are only 4 pieces of Oblivion DLC worth getting: Shivering Isles, Knights of the Nine, Mehrunes' Razor, and Spell Tomes. The rest are all "bases" of questionable merit, but they are dirt cheap and provide an easy storage space, so they aren't terrible. Bethesda really only got this kind of stuff right with Fallout 3, a game that I don't like anywhere as much as Oblivion, but still enjoy.
