The fifth installment in Bethesda's Elder Scrolls franchise is set in the eponymous province of Skyrim, where the ancient threat of dragons, led by the sinister Alduin, is rising again to threaten all mortal races. Only the player, as the prophesied hero the Dovahkiin, can save the world from destruction.
Also, on a pure technical level, Skyrim is very flawed with it's numerous bugs. I think it's unfair to give a GOTY title to it simply because the world is large and there's a lot of content when there are much more well polished and produced games even if they are shorter.
If it means people will stop making these threads then yes, Skyrim is the game of the year. Fuck, for all I care, it's game of the century as long as people give it a rest with these damn GOTY threads.
You guys would take the crippling framerate bug on the PS3 over any other game this year? You know, the one where you reach a certain point and the game can never produce a scene above 20 frames per second ever again? Yeah, right up there with games like Batman and Uncharted...
Skyrim has been the game I was most hyped for this year, and it hasn't let me down one bit. It has the Quality and Quantity argument on its side, and I believe other people feel the same. Brad even said on the Bombcast that he was amazed to see this kind of universal reception to a game.
It has some competition, sure, but this game will certainly win quite a few GOTYs.
There have been some incredible games this year. I'm still waiting for my copy of Skyward Sword, and I still have Saints Row 3, Skyrim, and Rayman Origins to complete, but I know which games are contenders for me personally. Skyrim and Batman are both in there.
I'd say, wait for Zelda to come out, but so far, my choice would definitely be Skyrim. I haven't gotten this feeling from playing a video game since Morrowind.
I'm really enjoying skyrim but I loved portal 2 and actually deus ex hr was a surprisingly good game. I haven't played enough of skyrim yet to really make a decision though.
Wasn't DotA 2 set for this year? Also, on a pure technical level, Skyrim is very flawed with it's numerous bugs. There was a "bug" in your statement (your it's in the second sentence should be its). I doubt you would want your post to be disqualified over bad grammar. Bugs and errors are part of life, and can be edited or patched as people catch them. Hardly a reason to DQ Skyrim from GOTY.
Witcher 2 for me I think, though I haven't played AC: Revelations yet. Skyrim is a great game but the version I'm playing (PC) is just too half-assed to be my personal GOTY. I'd be happy to see it win GB / Users GOTY though.

Actually it is when we're talking about game of the year. It's technically incompetent compared to other games which were just as good, if not better. It's a great game and one of the best I've played this year, but it's pathetic the number of issues that have carried over from Oblivion (some even from Morrowind) and as such it can't really stand up to a few other games that have released this year.
Wait, implying that Skyrim - game of the year? lolno
You're right, it's game of the year all years.
Morrowind was my favourite RPG and Skyrim is better than Morrowind. Feels great man.
Glorious unemployment
Bethesda is yet to release a game that is fun to play. At this point I'm certain that will never ever happen. You spent 100 hours on something so unenjoyable. How did you do it, mayng?
Certainly my personal game of the year. Don't know what the general opinion will be nor does it matter to me, 60 hours in Skyrim and I'm not about to quit loving it any time soon =)

Yeah but if the award were most polished game of the year, you would probably just end up giving it to the weirdest possible games.

Yeah some versions barely work and by some i mean the PS3 version, say what you will about Uncharted 3 but if you advise someone to get the PS3 port of Skyrim over Uncharted 3 you are a bad person.
Honestly, Skyrim is easily my GOTY. Followed by Portal 2 and Dungeon Defenders.

Not all. There is still Star Wars: The Old Republic, with its immense budget and famed developer.
Can't tell if you're being sarcastic. I'm really looking forward to The Old Republic, but honestly, it'll be far too early to judge an MMORPG on December 20th. I mean, to properly judge an MMORPG, you need to get to max level, experience some raid content, etc...
I can say that the lower level stuff, according to my friend is really compelling stuff.
Well.... Both marrowind and oblivion won numerous goty awards.... Don't see this being any different seeing as it is a very polished game given the scope. And you have to take scope into the factor.

You appear to have mistaken your opinion with a fact good man.
Uhm, no, played some at a friends house and found it pretty cool, but I would become bored as hell with it pretty quickly, open worlds are initially impressive but frustrating in the long, story didn't interest me, side quests seemed cool and plentyfull, but it's still nowhere close to Portal 2. I'd actually say I enjoyed Wheatly in Portal 2 more then the entirety of Skyrim. Then again, maybe I'm just sick of people constantly talking about this game at this point.. But it will probably win everything, everywhere, cause Bethesda games are apparently up there with Valve games when it comes to internet love, never will get that.
Will Skyrim be the game that I play the most this year and is most likely to come back to several times over the next few years ? Yes. Is it GOTY ? No.
Sure the game has both quality and quantity, but the quality is nowhere even close to what other games have shown us this year. The quality only reaches a level to justify the quanitity (if even that), if the game wasn't as massive it wouldn't have a chance at GOTY.
It's an explorers wet-dream, but in almost every other aspects it's just lacking any great innovation or execution. I mean seriously, if you put the features of Skyrim head to head with other great games this year can you really think of anything where it outshines other games ? The only things I can think of is the world and a pretty fancy-looking skill-tree.
