So I found an unusual gem and it told me to take it to an appraiser. 
The quest icon leads me to a man named Maul in Riften and when I talk to him I get nothing about the unusual gem.  
 
Anyone else having this problem and is there a fix?

He starts you on the thieves guild quest chain where you will eventually meet the person that can appraise them.

i have 3 of them and am yet to get them appraised

Yep, same here. I found three before I got them appraised, so they're now stacked, but the four I found after that are all taking up a spot each.

Thanks for the explanation on this. Thought my negative interation with Maul cut this quest off entirely.
Curious to see where this goes, especially since the only ones I've found have been on the bedside tables of three different Jarls. I smell dark wizardry.

Anyone have the problem with having Mara's Amulet and not being able to store them. I have several quest items, to which I have completed the quests for, that I cannot remove from my inventory. And yes, they have weight to them so it sucks.
