(Hope that doesn't count as a swear in the title).

Anyway, i had to reinstall Steam because of the normal everyday glitches with it. I installed LOTR: War in the north on it, then i said to myself: ''I'll install Skyrim later''. Then i realized that my saves are all gone, because of reinstalling Steam. I was pissed off, reaching about level 40, 100 smithing and all, complete story, and other factions complete. So, i stopped playing Skyrim.

It was hard, but i made it. If some DLC comes out, i will definetly buy it though.

I'm with the others. What did Steam do? From your meager details I can't figure out how this is Steam's fault.

Off on the Steam support page - "please move the Steamapps folder (C:\Program Files\Steam\Steamapps) outside of the Steam directory to prevent your games from being deleted." That way you don't have to reinstall any of your games, you simply install steam and it re-constructs your library for you.

As for saves, there typically stored elsewhere (My Docs etc), sometimes you'll find them in that steamapps folder so again, backing that up saves a lot of hassle.

Someone said it already, twice. So, I'll say it a third time. It's under your /documents folder. A folder that, because its the default directory for not just game saves, but files you work on, a place you backup regularly.

You can uninstall Steam all you like, uninstall the games, too. As long as you don't tell the game uninstaller to delete your saves, they'll be there.

When you find your saves in the /documents folder, back them up. Skyrim should know to look there for the save files. Delete all the files in the /documents/my games/skyrim directory, launch Skyrim. Save your game. That lone save file should get dumped to /documents/my games/skyrim. If it doesn't, well, that's odd. Find out where it -did- get saved to. Then, drop all your backup save files into the directory and fire up Skyrim. They should be available.

    That's stupid.

And it's not incompetence on the part of the user.

"Oh, I should've known that it wouldn't work out of the box, I have to move my folder out of the Steam directory!"

Why the heck should they be in such a place by default when it's obviously a dangerous place?

Saves aren't in the Steam directory, they are in the my documents folder, where almost every game on the PC these days places saves.

The Steam directory move is only for not reinstalling entire games if you remove Steam.

What "Steam normal, everyday glitches" are we talking about here?

Also, yeah. Your Skyrim save files are in My Documents. Steam doesn't touch them, even if you uninstall Steam itself or the game game. I fail to see the problem here.

New Vegas does but for whatever reason Bethesda did not include the Steam Cloud functionality in Skyrim.

Just to reiterate, Skyrim doesn't have cloud saves.

On a related note, is there any setup involved in getting cloud saves to work on games that support it, or is it something that just works automagically?

Settings/downloads+cloud/ tick the enable cloud sync option. This makes it default on for games that support it.

You can also enable/disable on a per game basis.

As a general warning for anyone who has to reinstall Steam or Windows, do NOT use the backup feature that is built into Steam to make a copy of your games. Please just do as the Steam support page says and copy your steamapps and userdata folders elsewhere.

The backup tool will a) fail repeatedly as you try and restore the games, and b) it will IGNORE GAMES YOU HAVE SELECTED FOR BACKUP ENTIRELY.

I had selected about 130GB of games to be backed up and when the file had finished backing up it was 93GB in size. I thought, "OK, it has just compressed the files a whole lot, that's cool." No, it wasn't cool. Turns out it just decided to not backup about seven of my games!

For everything Steam does right, that backup tool sure is a piece of shit.

I'm not going to jump onboard the nonsense train that some people in this thread decided to take a ride in, but seriously you should always backup saves directly whenever possible if it's a save you cherish enough. This is your own doing for being too trusting and honestly I have no idea how your saves got deleted in the first place as they are stored in your Documents folder. Make it a learning experience to remember to backup your stuff more effectively and to simply not be lazy about it, thinking it will all be fine. Finally I'm quoting this man as I definitely agree with it:
