Missing the mark on story and gameplay

I don't write reviews often, but playing this was a chore for the most part. The story-telling was heavy-handed and at times I would say somewhat nonsensical. The more "open" world feel was to the game's detriment, and left me feeling somewhat lost at points and often wondering why it was necessary at all. I'm not going to get into the people who come out of the woodwork because of their twisted opinions, this review has nothing to do with any sort of bias other than how I felt playing it. It was OK.

There were several parts of The Last of Us Part II where I thought that this had to be the end, right? Storylines were resolved, characters were redeemed, revenge had been enacted, and the story appeared to have nothing more to say. However, it just kept going. Another cutscene, another hour of rummaging through an abandoned building, another combat scenario requiring a half dozen resets. Whatever it was, it just kept going. The Last of Us Part 2 is a big budget AAA sequel to a game that didn’t need one and features a brutal story that doesn’t know how to end. The graphics are highly polished with visuals out of a blockbuster movie. The narrative features expertly crafted cinematography and motion capture. The game is also extremely violent with depictions of gore, torture and dismemberment. The story is an emotionally draining experience and maintains a somber tone throughout the 30 or so hours it takes...
