I'm sure the game is great, but I barely trust Empire for film reviews let alone game reviews these days.

I always wonder about the extremely linear complaint in this genre. It makes sense in games designed with choices to offer multiple paths. In a game like this, pointing out "this game is linear" is like pointing out "cars have wheels".

@extomar: I'm similar in this regard, but mostly because most people have no idea what "linear" means. It's the same thing with "immersion" getting thrown around.

Is the story that good I wonder, even if it is I probably will still like Bioshock Infinite more cos' it probably crazier.

If anyone could do something like this its Naughtydog. If it was a different developer sure but I trust Naughty Dog in this regard. Uncharted 3 was done by the "B-Team" but Last of Us is a "A-Team" game. Maybe it even can dethrone Uncharted 2 score wise^^

Obviously this means the game probably went 'The Walking Dead' on us with the girl and lead dude.

Some kind of drama happened that made this reviewer go, "Ahhhh.....That was beautiful... ;D"

Or maybe it's another uncharted. And no. I didn't read the review.

One more thing..... Super Metroid was better than Prime.

My definition of "What Citizen Kane was/is for films" is that Citizen Kane is a revolutionary jump in technical and themes. Producers and directors of the day honestly didn't think movies like Citizen Kane could be made let alone be watchable.

So by that definition, "The Citizen Kane for video games" would have to be a game that is a revolutionary jump in technical and thematic ideas. I have no idea if The Last of Us really is that but that is what it means to me when some one makes such a statement.

Yeah basically this. Also we should not forget that this is not an Uncharted like game in which you kill thousands of enemies or one wave after another. I think it is pretty clear since the demo that you can die very very easily so every encounter will be meaningful. Also no health regen, no crafting or inventory menus while pausing the game. etc. That combined with Naughtydogs excellent Storytelling could be really something really remarkable.

David Cage should just do PR for Naughty Dog, they do what he aspires to be, but he sells it better. The lowest score I am hearing is 93/100

Funny how people are talking about the CK moment in film making and comparisons.

I think the "Cane" moment already happened for video games when Uncharted 1 and 2 were released.

Go and look at any character action game in the years since Uncharted's release, and you're going to see a lot of games that adopted various techniques and visual/gameplay language of the Uncharted series.

Uncharted distilled a certain style of 3rd person gameplay that already existed into something bigger. They started a certain visual and gameplay language for that genre that persists, and will likely persist for a long time. Remember Me is the latest to use it, I can think of 5-6 big name games that adopted a majority of the Uncharted style.

However, much like if you go back in watch Citizen Kane, it doesn't hold up, same for if you go back and play Uncharted 1, you see all the flaws that they just didn't know would pop up while pioneering the specific style.

So, I see The Last of Us not as a jump forward, but rather a very fine tuned version of the Uncharted style, used to great effect to present a defining character story.

I think we are in a transition in terms of storytelling and emotional games and Last of us is exactly the stepping stone to take it to the next and best level. As Patrick has said. Last of Us is not a fun game it is depressing, real and emotional.

Walking dead did the same but had a very bad execution mixed with a fantastic story. Last of us or Naughty Dog can do both and this game will be long long remembered for sure. It is already a cult classic for thats what it did to this industry.

@darji: Eh, we'll see. This isn't the first time that the kane thing has been thrown out there, I know some reviewers like to say stuff like that because it sounds cool to make big statements. Looking forward to figuring it out for myself when I play it next week.

Gaming's Citizen Kane is more than a 10/10 review. I'm fairly convinced that it's hyperbole, Patrick's review was 5/5 and said nothing close to it being that revolutionary

    Me too.^^

At the moment I can just state what critics are saying and everyone except maybe these polygon guys lol a gushing about the emotional and bitter depressing story. Thats what I personally wanted and I am pretty sure it will be at least mine Citizen Kane moment XD

Story in games is still very young and really hope games will mature more with this kind of game and this kind of studio.

I do agree that saying "X is the Citizen Kane of Y" is probably hyperbole. Last of Us looks stellar and I'm really happy to see multiple games get this amount of attention earlier in the year but it isn't necessary to invoke Citizen Kane.

Like I've been saying...the gaming media is all over Naughty Dog's junk. Glad to see at least some people don't fall for it.

Also never even heard of half those sites...lol.

It's okay to just not like a game. Doing so doesn't mean that everyone else who likes it is somehow inferior. To think so is just being another gaming contrarian.

Likewise, it's okay just to like something most people don't like.
