Gameplay ***** The core gameplay is fueled by a stealth-action combat system that maintains the tension that moves the story. It's balanced; it instills danger and humility, but also gives players options on how to handle situations. |
Narrative ***** Superb motion-capture acting makes interactions between characters heartfelt and moving. Ellie in particular is an excellent character. The near-flawless story definitely invites a tough discussion on morality and nature of humanity. |
Visuals **** From a technical standpoint, it's one of the strongest games on the PS3 and certain parts and scenes in the game are absolutely gorgeous, but gritty realistic environments may soon be victim of uncanny valley if it isn't already. |
Sound ***** Gustavo Sanatolalla's musical score, dominated by acoustic guitar, heavy percussion and other distinct instruments captures the mood and essence of the story, as well as the brutal gameplay. It's both tense and beautiful. |
Pacing **** It flows smoothly with little to impede your progress and no chapter feels like a weak link. However, there are occasions where it feels like it follows video-game like structure, administering danger and fear in controlled contrived doses. |
Originality ***** Gory apocalyptic games have been done before, but nowhere near this extent. Whether it's the story, the combat, or the multiplayer, this covers a lot of new ground in a genre that can often be stale. |
Replay Value ***** You will want to experience the single-player adventure again, but the multiplayer is what shines, offering something you can't get from the many typical shooters out there.. Playing against a human player rather than an AI is deeper, complex and more rewarding. |
