Yesterday we heard, along with a narrator, Zelda speak. I found the trailer to be quite moving even though I've only admired the series from a distance. The direction they are going for is very reminiscent of many Ghibli films, right down to the title treatment and it's reveal. They really nailed the voice work which people have been asking for almost as long as I can remember, which excites me. Here is hoping they'll let you play in Japanese!

But one question still remains: will Link speak?

Edit: I heard the English trailer after making this topic and my feeling only apply to the Japanese voice work. :/

Zelda always spoke. Link didn't. Why would that change just because it has voice acting now?

He will say, "I'm going to kill Baron Praxis!", at the start of the game.

Link "talks" in the game for sure. There are a few moments early on where you have dialogue options, essentially letting you continue a conversation with a guy or leave and move on. They aren't voiced, though. The options are more like "Oh, tell me more" and "Bye" than "Continue conversation" and "Leave," so the implcation is that Link is definitely capable of holding a conversation.

I think it's already been confirmed that Link won't talk, even though everyone else in the game will.

He should just talk already! Especially in this game! Come on, Nintendo! Ugh! Blank slate characters are the worst!

    Of course not.

The voiced story sequences are essentially a voicing of what in previous games would be text boxes. Link has never even had text boxes beyond the occasional instance of minor player dialogue choice which, more often than not, amounted to yes or no choices.

Sure, but that implication has always been there. Characters have always reacted to Link as if he has spoken, even when the game displayed not text to indicate what he's said. Infrequent dialogue choices and the continual implication by other character that Link has relayed some information to them is pretty much status quo for Zelda games.

    No.

I imagine all communication at Nintendo takes place on teletype machines, "how was your weekend" being read letter by letter in real-time.

@mems1224: I didn't know they had a trailer with English voice. The tail end of the conference I caught had the Japanese voice which I thought was great. I just check out the English one and I think that's the one you're talking about?

The only way I'd accept Link speaking is if the game had a mechanism to sample my own voice, and even then I'd want it to read out my dialogue selections, various action grunts, and maybe various throwaway lines like greetings and whatnot.

Link is not a character. Link is a vanilla player stand-in, the instrument via which Nintendo tells you how to feel.

Prooobably not. Gonna be some Half-Life 2 "man of few words" type shit.

If they had Dragon Age 1-esque dialogue for Link, I'd be a-ok with that. Get some characterization in (player-driven no less) while still keeping his actual voice and performance in your head.

I think the fact that Link has the same grunts in both English and Japanese footage is proof enough.

Should he? Maybe. (It'd be kinda weird at this point to be honest, but I think it could be well done. The longer they go and the more voice acting from other characters they implement into the series, the more it stands out. Although there are plenty other games with voice acting and a silent protagonist that are well done.)

Will he? I highly doubt it. (Nothing in the marketing has indicated that he's going to do anything more than grunt and maybe yell. You know, standard reactionary stuff.)

Although you gotta admit, it would be super affecting if at the end of the game or something he pulls a Caesar moment from Rise of the planet of the apes.

I would be way into Link finally speaking, but I don't believe that's going to be the case, at least not for this game.

No, Link will most definitely not talk. I also disagree, I think the English voice work is totally fine. The most you'll get out of Link is choices for what to say through text as seen in some of the gameplay trailers.

In Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword, Link was absolutely his own character. He had his own emotions. He reacted to things. He was weirded out by and furious at Ghirahim at various points in SS. When he's his own character, the thought "oh, he's just a stand-in for the player" holds less water with me.

That's not to say I need Link to talk. Just, y'know, that argument seems kind of silly at this point.

I'd like him to be canonically mute in any game where he is clearly an actual character. GLaDOS referring to Chell as a "dangerous, mute, lunatic" was a really fun moment for me.
