    It's the designer's go-to guy. If they want to steer a player in a given direction they'll lock an in game door and force the player to find a way to either unlock it or find an alternate route.

    In some games locked doors will be clearly visibly different from other doors, indicating its locked state, while in others the player may have to interact with these doors to receive a text prompt telling them it is locked. Doors can be locked through conventional mechanical locks, through means of magic, or electronically. Methods to unlock doors can involve retrieving keys, using lockpicks, solving puzzles, pressing switches or entering special passwords.
