The Residents are a San Francisco-based music, performance and art group first formed in 1969. During their multi-decade career they have produced numerous music and multimedia projects, including three CD-ROMs in the 1990s. The group is composed of at least four anonymous individuals, with possibly around one hundred more people contributing across various projects.
The Residents have worn many costumes and masks over the years, but they are most closely associated with the top hat-wearing giant eyeballs.
Musical Style
The Residents' music is hard to classify, but the simplest explanation would be to say they are avant-garde rock musicians. However their catalog also contains blues, R&B and country. Their music can also be be described as dark carnival/sideshow music.
