Funcom and EA Partners have inked a deal to co-publish Funcom’s long-in-development MMO The Secret World, EA announced this morning in a press release. No release date was mentioned.

For those of you who haven't been keeping up with your once-shelved MMOs, The Secret World looks like it could be an ambitious endeavor for the Age of Conan developer. Funcom isn't going to use the standard character-class-and-level-up model in The Secret World. Instead, it'll focus on abilities, allowing for some sort of extensive character customization without the MMO grind or pre-defined talent builds.

And it won't be set in yet another world inspired by Tolkien. The Secret World takes place in a modern setting, though its "real world" is one in which secret societies have pull and people have superpowers. Oh, and also monsters. Gotta fight something I guess.

    No Caption Provided

“Players will get the opportunity to join one of the three secret societies and fight for power over important locations throughout our own world,” David DeMartini, GM of EA Partners said in a statement. “Players will also journey through familiar places across the globe, such as Egypt, New England, London, New York and Seoul and battle monsters of myth and legend.”

Funcom plans to release The Secret World on the PC and the Xbox 360, though I wouldn't keep my hopes up for the latter version. Not only did EA neglect to mention it in today's announcement, but Funcom also has yet to follow through on its Age of Conan Xbox port.

So little is shown of this game. I can't but be a little bit skeptical about this.

    Cataclysm was a huge success.
The Old Republic looks really promising.
Guild Wars 2 dev. interviews give off a good vibe.
I enjoyed the hell out of the DC: Universe PS+ beta.

Excuse me for sounding cynical, but why exactly is Funcom still doing MMOs?

    @EgoCheck616:
Because they still haven't figured out how to end the Longest Journey story, so they're biding their time, releasing half-baked MMO's, perhaps hoping to run themselves into the ground and wash their hands of the responsibility of finishing TLJ's story.

Nice, good luck Funcom - you have great ideas for games, but a bit low on patience for polish. :D

Knowing FunComs penchant for making bad MMOs I'll be skeptical about this ones game play. If it actually works and is fun I may give it a try.

I heard about this one before they shelved it. Always seemed interesting. Maybe being partnered with EA will help them make this one good at least. I don't know, we shall see. The concept is a fun one imo.

Sounds like it has some interesting ideas, but I'm fine with playing EVE Online until TOR comes out. I just don't care for yet another MMO.

Y'know I was just looking at some stuff from this game yesterday. The combat looks a bit MMO-y but everything else (well aside from it having servers) is really awesome.

Still I wish Funcom would just start working on Dreamfall: Chapters!

The modern day fantasy idea is a good one, but need more details and gameplay footage. Also don't release it this year, too many big MMOs, wait a while and make it good.

Do we seriously need any more MMO games? There's many examples of MMO's failing due to lower levels of expenditure from companies trying to get into the same vein as Wow. I feel like without the absolute most premiere funds and development schedule a succesful MMO isn't
possible on a large profit scale.

I don't think they're ever going to do that, unfortunately. Most people who played Dreamfall probably won't remember how it ended and all the different complex twists in the story, I sure don't. I remember loving the game, but the ending left me so disappointed that until a sequel comes (which I doubt it will) I don't consider it a sequel of The Longest Journey. They shouldn't have released a game without a conclusion if they didn't have a 100% certainty of making a sequel for it. From the moment Dreamfall ended I had the feeling it's going to be another Shenmue II, I hope Funcom proves me wrong.

Well the concept and setting has had me intrigued for a while.  I've played several Pen and Paper games in similar settings. (GURPS Illuminati and Shadowrun pop off the top of my head) I've been hoping for the game to come out and I'm glad they have a publisher.  I was starting to worry it had become vaporware.

I found the concept of the game great.  But, if it's just WoW with a different skin then I'm not interested.  That model of game has been beaten into the ground with a ball peen hammer.

I hope this article didn't mean to imply that the world of Age of Conan was inspired by Tolkien. The original Conan stories were written decades before Tolkien's books.

@samsaturday:  Well before... but not decades.  The Hobbit was first published in 1937 and Conan first showed up in 1932.  But yeah kinda off to be calling it Tolkien inspired ;)

Also, Vindictus has been a huge hit in the F2P side of things.

I highly doubt there isn't already anything out there for people to enjoy.

The next time I'll hear about this game is when it goes free to play.

Then the last thing I'll hear is that the 360 port is canceled.

I hope this means good things for the game and that the developers are quietly beavering away at making it something really great. The fact that it's been so 'underground' for so long does not worry me at all - there are far too many flash in the pan MMO's that get released to early and never go anywhere. Conan had some great ideas but no follow up and to me tSW always sounded a really interesting alternative to the WoW's of this world. If the game can build on that promise and enter the world with a vengeance (for that is what it'll take) then as far as I'm concerned they can take as long as they like with it!

Age Of Conan was Funcom's best creation. It's a shame it was so incomplete and glitchy, since what it did have was truly amazing. I'll just wait for it to go Free-To-Play D:

I must just be really into MMO news, because it is surprising to me that everyone is just finding out about this title or thought it was dead.

The last real news/content we had was only back in August. Thats not that long ago, games take time y'know. Cool news that FunCom will join up with EA Partners, man is that list getting long.

I tried about maybe twenty minutes of the Age of Conan demo, and damn, nothing about that game felt properly polished.   I couldn't really understand how people liked the game at all.   It also ran like crap on my computer at low settings, which I kind of knew going in, but damn if I haven't played games that looked far better than those low settings on my machine without a hitch.

So, sounds interesting in theory like so many other MMOs, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

This scares the crap out of me.  It seems like it's going to be a TOTAL train wreck!  After all, look at how well Age of Conan turned out.  I mean more than a year after the game comes out there are still game breaking bugs in the starting area.

"Funcom isn't going to use the standard character-class-and-level-up model in The Secret World. Instead, it'll focus on abilities, allowing for some sort of extensive character customization without the MMO grind or pre-defined talent builds."
...Wait a second. Didn't APB do something like this? Hmm.
Now don't get me wrong, I'm looking forward to it and I think it looks good, but as my experience with MMOs has gone, if it isn't WoW then it's probably not very good.

Not sure why all the Funcom hate. Anarchy Online was an amazing MMO for the first 6 years. Age of Conan isn't THAT bad either; especially since the overhauled update/expansion-pack, in which it's become a great MMO.

Only issue is that that bane WoW, no matter how much hand-holding they add to that game, people flock to it like sheep. If that game could get knocked off its undeserved throne, perhaps other MMOs would finally have a chance. At least, that's my opinion.

With that said, TSW looks great, but chances are it won't do that great simply because of the lack of people willing to change MMos.
