@golguin: Your explanation is making me think I have that place and its mechanics figured all wrong.
My line of thinking was that the three line shape or the "ship" is like an inverter for one point of failure in the puzzle, so you're making a solution for the puzzle that intentionally has one thing wrong with it that is also contained in the same part of the grid as the ship so that the ship cancels it out, which then makes the puzzle solved.
Either just different ways of thinking about a ruleset or I've gotten the completely wrong place in my head haha

That sounds like my explanation just with different terms. It sounds right. The key I think is that the ship needs an incorrect answer contained in it's space to cancel it out like the odd color or the dot that wasn't traced.
Im at 159 (+19). Think I've played it maybe 10-15 hours? I know of a bit more of the +'s but didn't bother as I felt I shouldn't be focusing on that.
Kinda stuck. All the puzzles that I'm aware of I either:
Really enjoyed what I've played so far. Done my best not to look up hints, but now I'm starting to feel depressed because I want to progress, have too many other games/projects going on, but don't want to look up hints, but also don't want to stare at a wall for more hours.
EDIT: As expected, fire Witness up for first time today and figure out a puzzle I was stuck on in 2 seconds.. hmm..
@golguin: basically yeah. The triangle things basically "eat" one error to satisfy their own condition.
I'm up to 436 +76 +1. That second +1 is new. Currently looking for the hexagon patterns, I've got 5 out of 6 (missing no. 4). Also I found the credits.
Edit: Found the underground, this got real weird real fast.
I don't know the number exactly but after playing for 2-3 hours last night, I finished the keep, the monastary, the woods (lumbermill one) and a few other panels elsewhere. I've found a little under 10 audio tapes and I think 3 of those "loose" panels. What the fuck are those even for? (Don't actually answer that.)
I have to say, the tutorials are pretty genius. The tetris blocks were actually more "forgiving" than I thought, so to speak.
@quantris: So the game doesn't end after you "finish" it? I had unlocked the mountain a while ago, but I've been afraid of going inside because I don't want to hit a point of no return where I can't go back and finish the puzzles I have left.
Can anyone confirm for me that there's no point of no return or anything at the end? I'm at the point where I can activate the camera at the top of the mountain, but I want to be able to easily go back and do other stuff around the island.
I've read that the game just dumps you back to the menu/new game when you finish it, but that you can just reload a previous save. Not the most elegant solution, but it's there. Haven't been able to try it myself because I'm on my way out the door, so take it with a grain of salt until you can get a confirmed answer from someone who's done it.
The game does end after you finish it, and actually for me the program quit.
But there is a save right before the last action that triggers the ending sequence and you can load it and return to the starting area. There is no "point of no return" or even any point where you're locked in to solving a particular puzzle before you can back out.

I concur with this (cancels one error). Usually puzzles with that thing in it are made easier by its presence if you know how it works, especially the ones with tetris.
I didn't see it as a ship; I thought it was representing some kind of electronics (looks like a flux capacitor).
260+42 now and around 15 hours. I'm bad a walking away and keep banging my head against a puzzle until it cracks and I also check every nook and cranny for secrets, so it's taking me a while. Currently stuck on a panel in the flower house - not sure if I'm out of brain juice or if I'm missing something (already figured out one trick, not sure if there are several).
Funny how you fly through some puzzles and then some just take forever - I think the swampy bit was the hardest for me, so far. Desert ruins area took me a while as well, but that wasn't really because the puzzles were hard - just annoying as hell. Haven't figured out the monastery yet, have yet to spot the entrance to the tree-houses and there were some camouflaged panels that I found early on and had to abandon - not sure if they were a one-off or if they will lead to something. So many questions still!
@dunchad: I'm stuck on the same panel as you in the flower house! I thought I had the logic down but it seems impossible to do it the way it seems like it should be done based on the puzzles just before it.

The third one in the room with the stairs going up? Yeah - I thought I knew how to do it, but couldn't see the answer. Gonna hit the bed and hope divine inspiration strikes. Let me know if you figure it out or realize there's something more to it - it's not fun trying to solve an unsolvable puzzle. So far the game has been really good with that - this is the first time I've felt unsure whether I'm missing something or if the puzzle is just puzzling.
After I made my last post I couldn't stop thinking about those damn tetrominos so I went back in and have played pretty well straight through the evening. I'm now sitting at 224 +5 and I feel like my brain has turned completely to mush.

Figuring out that flower puzzle was the best feeling. Keep at it!

Unfortunately for me, I stumbled into the answer after trying lots of different things, and only THEN did I understand why that was the correct answer. Now I've finished the whole greenhouse area.
Currently at 460 +79. I finished the 11 areas and was rummaging around for a few hours trying to track down one major loose end, and I finally made it there. I see many more puzzles coming in quickly now.
195+23.
I was rocking the puzzle strings until I reached the tetris swamp. I lost something like 45 minutes because I had literally forgotten one of the rules established in the tutorial and I kept banging my head against it telling myself I had tried every option. Once I went back and checked the tutorial I saw what I had forgotten they all fell right into place. Then it got a bit too complex for me to hold and arrange in my mind so I went to Illustrator and instantly solved one that I couldn't visualize.
The graph paper in Illustrator is officially out now. So much more convenient than paper and pencil.
@dunchad: I thought you were talking about a different puzzle! I'm still on the last panel in the main room that I assume opens the door to the puzzles you're talking about. It's infuriating because it's almost identical to the panel before it with one key difference and I can't do it :(
108 in 7 hours, and after an area where environmental hints are literally all over the place, I feel so f***ing done with the game.
About 12 hours or so in now and at 330+29 (8 lasers active), but now I'm at the sound ones and am hopelessly stuck. I'm terrible at distinguishing tonal differences. I hate those fucking birds.
It's the only place where I have any idea what the hell is going on though right now, so this sucks.
3 1/2 hours later and I'm at 332+29. I hate this area, my ears are just not up for it. It's also making me hate birds.
505 +81 and I have to fucking call it a night. The (presumably) last thing you have to do in this game is fucking hysterical. I just don't have it in me right now at this early hour, but holy shit this fucking thing LOL I really hope the Bombinos get there because I can't wait to hear what they think of it. Brilliant.
Sigh, these late-game puzzles are really bumming me out. A lot of them seem to be designed to be as irritating as possible :(
320 +42. (I looked up the solution to the third hedge maze. The reason I didn't get the answer kinda wasn't my fault, to be honest. I won't explain why, but I was pretty annoyed.)
Due to a few puzzle-based revelations last night I've jumped up to about 250 puzzles solved and I have 5 lasers activated. I've completed The Keep, Shady Trees, the Symmetry area, The Jungle, and The Tree Temple. I'm half done The Quarry, The Swamp, and The Marsh (I think that's what the Tetris place is called).
16 hours in, I'm at 343 +38.
Got 7 lasers. I've done Symmetry, Desert, Town, Monastery, Jungle, Shady Trees and Bunker. I'm so close to being done with the other lasers I found so will get on them soon.
This game is so rad. I genuinely felt like a genius when I was solving some of the puzzles in town. Some of them are pretty messed up!
@brunothethird: Let me guess, you were listening to something else while playing?
Just started, first followed a path that seemed logical and then just got lost a bit, solving puzzels here and there. Got to 91, but now it's time to sleep! Better than I thought, although I still think this gorgeous world should have been saved for an old-school platformer.
Overall, I think this game is great, but there are types of puzzles that I walked away from with a sense of dread because I didn't like them but know I'm going to be dealing with the concepts again. I'm not talking about puzzles I couldn't solve, I'm talking about sections of puzzles where I solved the whole set and walked away not having enjoyed my time doing it. I won't say which ones, but I'm only about 25% complete right now so most people have probably seen them.
But again, overall I think the game is, at the very least, peaceful and beautiful. I haven't come across anything yet that made me want to quit and not return.
Finally finished. 430+43. 42 hours. I feel like I still have a bunch of things to solve :| I'm really lost on most of the remaining +1s
Edit: why the fuck does it autosave you after the point of no return. Luckily I created a back-up save...

You can exit the elevator.
Anyway, I'm at 484 +43.
@sgtsphynx: Ah, okay :P I guess I was too quick to revert to my backup.
I can't even image how you can get to another 54 puzzles.
I finished the game tonight as well. All lasers activated, ending achieved, 423 +15.
What a fantastic game. I don't usually love puzzle games but I really enjoyed almost everything in The Witness. There were a couple puzzles here and there that weren't my favourite but overall it felt absolutely fantastic solving puzzles in this game. So many neat mechanics, both in pure puzzles and testing your environmental awareness. Getting through the town was a good test of my overall knowledge of the game and felt really great to finish. Absolutely going to be one of my favourite games of the year. Good job Jon Blow!
23 hours and the count is at 387+54. Started puzzling at the top of the mountain now. Not sure if I'll continue on my own after the end, or if I'll rely on the internet for the completion. I'll definitely look up audio log locations to see how many I've missed - they're too tiny to go looking for. As for the rest...I think I'll give it a go on my own first. I really want to find the other theater codes (only found 3) and I need to know how to get to the underground areas that are teased by multiple entrances.
