    Tsukushi Makino is the lead character of Hana Yori Dango.  She is a girl from a poor family who earns a scholarship to attend a prestigious private high school.  However, she quickly runs afoul of the F4, a group of the four most popular boys on campus, and is flagged as an outcast.  Not one to be intimidated, Tsukushi continues down her own path, not afraid to fight back against the F4 and eventually earns their respect.
     
    Initially infatuated with the F4's Rui Hanazawa, she gets into frequent confrontations with Tsukasa Domyouji that gradually become less antagonistic as the two develop feelings for each other despite their vast differences in class and social standing.
