    From Dusk (Un)Till Dawn 6

The summer is behind us and school is back in session, but being a fan of video games, that’s actually good news! It’s usually the release of the latest edition of Madden every year that reigns in the fall period of game releases but this year, Madden 16 was not alone in its late summer release date. The Playstation 4 exclusive horror title from Supermassive Games, Until Dawn, is what I see as being the first great game in a fantastic looking fall lineup this year.Until Dawn tells a...

A surprisingly good take on the horror genre 0

Horror is not a genre I typically play - I frequently find jump scares to be silly, and whilst I appreciate psychological horror at times, I find it can quickly become uninteresting as maintaining the required level of tension over the course of a game is a difficult task. Until Dawn sidesteps these issues through a gleeful and liberal overuse of "teen horror" clichés, and it is clear that developers have a deep understanding of the genre. Though this use of familiar tropes makes the horr...

Responsibiltiy And Agency In Until Dawn. 0

There's a love of the "teen slasher" sub-genre of film that is extremely obvious in Supermassive Games' Until Dawn, as it tells the horrifying tale of one night that eight friends find themselves trying to survive as they are trapped in the woods in the mountains of Alberta in Winter. The stereotypes found in these films are all present in Until Dawn; among the characters there is the obligatory "funny guy", the "popular guy", the "bitchy girl" and, of course, the "slutty girl". As well, the usu...

    Until Dawn Review 0

Until Dawn is a horror game about a group of teens who meet up once again at a lodge owned by one of them one year after the disappearance of two of their friends. But many horrors haunt the teens and test their will, sanity, and loyalty to each other. Every situation is changed based on your previous choices, and whether or not some of teens like each other, or even kill each other is based on your previous choices. Also along the way, you meet a very strange man known as Dr. Hill, who is a psy...

An interesting game in concept, but the awful characters and dialogue ruin any tension it might have had. 0

I'll say straight-up that I've never seen any of the Nightmare on Elm Street/Friday the 13th/Halloween movies that this game is based on. I love horror, but I've always been more of a fan of the creeping psychological horror than the gorefests. That existential dread of being faced with something beyond your comprehension. While gore and jump scares have their place in horror, Until Dawn relies on them far too heavily for them to be effective. The biggest problem with this game is the characters ...

Classic Slasher Movie in Videogame Form 0

I enjoyed Until Dawn, much to my satisfaction. In recent years, I've found myself much more interested in story focused, less complex games, such as the Telll Tale adventure games and the like. I was hoping to get a similar experience from Until Dawn, and I can say I am very satisfied. The gameplay is basic, yet challenging. You are either moving a character through an area and clicking on shiny things to look more closely at, and action sequences which are entirely quick time events. It tota...

    Great Horror Game 0

I loved this game and what it did conceptually. I do think it's sort of a one playthrough game as far as experience goes since you know what the opposite choices outcome will be most of the time. Still the game makes choices matter in a way few games do. There was one choice outcome I felt was very badly implemented and one in the finale that is not really telegraphed as well as it should be as far as consequence of said choice. The movement controls are poor at times and the inspect mechanic ge...

    Boom! Butterfly Effect! 0

When I first started playing the game I really wasn’t sure what to expect. Horror games have that challenge to really scare the people that are playing it and personally scary movies usually don’t do it for me unless they are superb. Until Dawn was different than any other horror game I played in the sense that I felt it kept drawing me back to play it more and I became extremely attached to some characters, making me act like any human would trying to save the ones they care about m...

Until Dawn - Meat Product 0

If Until Dawn was released as one of the slasher films it desperately wants to emulate, no one would care. It would be one of dozens, if not hundreds of horror movies submitted (and rejected) to Fantasia every year, it would get released directly on DVD or video-on-demand, and it would be promptly forgotten. But the spectre of interactive novelties reared its ugly head, backed with a lengthy production cycle and expensive technology. It is the worst of both worlds, really: flat, unlikeable chara...

A nice change of pace. 0

Choices do matter in this game, so that's nice. Wish you could've been able to save everyone (yes you can let Josh live, but not really since he turns into a Wendigo). Controls can be kind of awkward at times with the camera placement, but for the most part are fine. The "character traits" and "relationships" meters could've been used better and give you unique dialogue options or unique scenarios. This game feels like you're in a horror movie and that's what matters most to me for a game like ...
