Utawarerumono is a visual novel that includes strategy RPG segments developed by Leaf and was published by Aquaplus for the PC as an eroge title in 2002. The game follows the adventures of an amnesiac hero, Hakuoro, who finds himself in the care of a family from a small village after receiving grave injuries from an unknown assailant. Sting Entertainment later created ports of Utawarerumono for the PlayStation 2 in 2006 and PlayStation Portable in 2009 that removed all the adult content as well as expanded the gameplay in the RPG sections. Utawarerumono's story has been adapted into several different media including manga, audio dramas, and a 2006 anime television series which was released in the west by ADV Films and later Funimation. Aquaplus never published Utawarerumono outside of Japan but an unofficial English translation patch was created by a fan group named Mirror Moon in 2008 that translated the PC version of the title.
Aquaplus produced a sequel to Utawarerumono years later for the PlayStation 4, PS3, and PlayStation Vita. Released in two parts, the games were called Utawarerumono: Mask Of Deception, published in 2015, and Utawarerumono: Mask of Truth, released in 2016. Atlus USA eventually localized and published both titles in North America in 2017, marking the first time an entry in the franchise was officially translated
