The Valley of Drakes is a connective area in Dark Souls. Little more than a few narrow cliffs and bridges, its main purpose is to provide a link between the larger zones of New Londo Ruins, Blighttown and Darkroot Basin. Novice players are most likely to first discover the Valley via the elevator shortcut located behind the Black Knight in lower Darkroot Basin. However, the Master Key can be used to access the Valley of Drakes earlier by way of a small locked gate near the main entrance of New Londo Ruins; this route is often used by veteran players to bypass most of upper Blighttown. Releasing the great Seal in New Londo Ruins will also open the large iron doors between the Valley and the previously-flooded lower section of New Londo, providing yet another connection between areas.
An Undead Dragon is perched on one of these cliffs near the middle of the area and guards a few valuable items; the dragon will not attack unless provoked, either by a player's attacks or by picking up the nearby items. True to its name, this area also features several blue Drakes, smaller dragon-like creatures that favor swooping attacks and can breathe lightning.
