Dev Update #1 - The Big Adventure

A child with an odd ability stuck in a strange land. A dangerous natural environment inhabited by a strange civilization. Vane is an open-world adventure game based on mystery and exploration.

This marks the start of our devlog for Vane, a strange adventure game that we are all very excited about. We will be keeping you updated on how the game progresses, delving into features and technical stuff, and are looking forward to hearing all the feedback we can get along the way. Currently we have an early prototype that we continuously build and expand on and things are progressing great. Rui Guerreiro, the main creative force on the project, will be the one taking over most of the devlogging from here on out.

Vane is a single player game about exploring a world and it's mysteries, about unraveling the forces behind this strange land. As such we will have to balance some story reveals here and there to keep you interested without spoiling too much, so apologies in advance if things sometimes are a little vaguer than you'd like - it's our goal to be as forthcoming about the game as possible without ruining things.

Friend & Foe is made up of Ivar Dahlberg, Rasmus Deguchi (that's me), Rui Guerreiro, Thomas Lilja and Victor Santaquiteria - five guys who've spent lots of time as artists in the game industry and long ready for the indie adventure. Rui and I used to work together at Sony on The Last Guardian, and the other guys have numerous big-league titles under their belt, like Bionic Commando, Battlefield 3 and Killzone. In a lot of ways we know what we're doing, but at the same time we are all noobs at this.

All in all we are super excited to go indie and share our development with the world. We hope you'll like it too.

    My thoughts

Wow. Holy shit yes please. I'm getting strong Journey + Ico + Shadow of the Colossus thoughts and feelings from just this initial glimpse at the game, WHICH I'D NEVER EVEN HEARD OF UNTIL JUST NOW JESUS CHRIST. Long and lonely sands stretching far off into the distance. Sand riddled winds brushing past you with every gust of hot, dry air passing over the unending dunes. Yes. Yes. YES. All this, hopefully, from a small Tokyo-based indie studio staffed by just five people! This + No Man's Sky = Small Teams Crushing Shit Hard dot com

The Team ICO cred has me excited but the Bionic Commando/Battlefield 3/Killzone does not. But hey atleast this game will probably come out unlike The Last Guardian.

    I'd back it.

Wait, is it a Kickstarter? Or are they funding it some other way?

Because if they make a Kickstarter, this looks like something I'd actually put some money behind.

This + No Man's Sky = Small Teams Crushing Shit Hard dot com

Absolutely! Let's scatter all the big teams into smaller teams that make amazing games! Transistor is mij GOTY so far.

Think of the amount of teams that would come out of all of the Ubisoft studio's, every 3 days a new release! :)

I never played that but I keep hoping Jeff will play it on a livestream one day.

A Kojma game without limitless resources wouldn't be a Kojima game. I love the MGS games because they had the money and time to develop all these little side things like advanced box-tech.

    1. That MGS reply chain has me in stitches over here, guyz. STAHP!

    2. Looks like something I want to spend money on.

    3. WAAAAAAAAY more interested in that Dangerous Men thing. When you say "studio in Japan wants to make a game paying homage to '80s buddy cop movies with tons of explosions and the artwork is a skull with a Cyclops visor and a stick of TNT as a cigarette in its mouth," that's something that is VASTLY more interesting to me.

Well, read that to mean that they have done video game work before and know what shipping a video game means. Don't put anything on these people (and what they'll be doing in this five person studio) based on your like/dislike of any of those titles mentioned.

Love hearing about the budding Japanese Indie scene. It's been around for ages, but only now that some high profile developers are going into it has it seemed to be brought up.

Haha, holy shit. Didn't have much to contribute to the conversation, but it was worth clicking on this thread for those gifs.

Edit: To clarify, I'm referring to the Metal Gear ones, though I don't think that needed clarification. honestly... The game looks pretty
