History
Prior to its rebranding, Vault-Tec University was a local college in Morgantown that gave classes on classic education. In 2031, the university was rebranded by Vault-Tec Corporation, which had taken an interest in the school's location. When the company began constructing a vault in the area, it gradually altered the curriculum of the university into more of a vocational school for its employees. This included a highly competitive Overseer course.
The university featured several departments meant to educate prospective Overseers on the subjects in which they were expected to be proficient, including leadership and medical knowledge. The university also featured a simulation vault underground that allowed students to become accustomed to vault life. This simulation vault was also where Overseer candidates would carry out experiments they devised and proposed to the Dean of Overseer Training, Harland Elliot.
The final experiment to be carried out in the university's simulation vault was devised by Drew Collingsworth and began on October 15, 2077. Collingsworth's experiment, which would test the viability of a new artificial food paste as a substitute for normal rations, excited Dean Elliot. Elliot saw potential in the experiment, and secretly altered the paste to induce a lethal arterial plaque buildup in an effort to observe how dwellers might respond to an unsafe food supply.
Collingsworth was not made aware of the change, and recorded his bewilderment on his personal terminal. An emergency attempt was made to switch the food supply back to the normal rations, but a black market had emerged and exhausted this supply. By this time, the Great War had happened outside and communication with the university was lost. Collingsworth, believing that the tremors he felt from the bombs were earthquakes, could not understand why he was unable to communicate with the university. On November 2, less than a month after the experiment began, Collingsworth's office was stormed by residents of the vault. Collingsworth locked himself in his bedroom where he would eventually die, presumably of hunger or thirst. The remains of the residents who attempted to breach his room lay in the office.
