History
The most notable uses of vertical cover in a three dimensional game are from Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, and Dark Void. In Metal Gear Solid 2, the player was able to hang on cover in order to avoid enemy fire. Uncharted 2 took this further by allowing the player to shoot while hanging.
In Dark Void, the player is able to ascend vertically up a cliff-side through the use of a rocket pack, along with being able to descend by swinging from cover to cover. The system is similar to the Gears of War style of cover, where the player uses basic controls to jump to the next placement, while still being able to duck, aim, and shoot.
