Awesome video GB crew :) Unfortunately I have to add No Man's Sky to my ever growing pile of "probably cool games ruined by annoying inventory management." For me, it's an awesome exploration game with completely arbitrary and annoying survival and crafting mechanics. Maybe the creative mode is the way to go.

If anyone wants to go see a good look at all of the actual new content in this game go check out Waypoint Austin Walker's stream of NMS on twitch or their website. They cover a lot more which GB didn't even know about, like missions, side quests, frieghters, land rovers, hostile alien swarms, how the main quest differs, warp gates, etc. They did their research.

I had a feeling GB would just try to jump in from a new game without realizing most of the new stuff is later on in the game. To be fair, the beginning of the game is somewhat different than V 1.0 but it isn't substantial enough by itself to make video content for.

This is more useful for people like me where my friends wanted our group to get this game. After watching this and seeing what the co-op actually is I am glad I turned it down.

Who cares what the end-game is when what they are showing off is the co-op.

Yeah, for any real informative deep dive into something substantial Austin does a much better job of it.

The thing is, it's not end-game content Austin was showing. He was showing content after about 4-5 or so hours into the story. So no, what was shown here is not the full extent of the co-op. I mean Jeff is even tweeting about his new experiences in the game even now. GB decided to jump the gun too soon and thus what we saw was a bunch of jumping around and shooting at pirates/sentries because NMS is first and foremost a narratively structured game that unlocks content as you go. It's not Left 4 dead, CoD Zombies, or Fortnite co-op where you are given all the tools upfront. It's hard to explain and hard for me to compare it to something else but hopefully I helped give you a better idea as to what I mean.

Nothing I've seen outside of this really has any great hooks for the multiplayer. Maybe it will get there eventually but so far everything I've seen is you can play it with another person but no real reason to.

The game still looks boring to play and the coop while finally being added to the game does not look worthwhile.

For those interested, there is an actual story campaign now. They didn't get even close to being past the tutorial in this video.

Pretty funny the mods that first came out still make the game look better than what the devs have been able to produce. Guess I'll reinstall this to try it at 4k with mods,

Jason got killed by other players right away jeff said so everyone is hostile? I don't like m y video games being like real life so fuck that sounds lame

Making this third person immediately makes this look 100% more appealing.

BTW as far as this stream goes; this shows what normal people picking up and playing the game might experience.

No real person goes into agame with a check list of new features to "show off". It's cool if you want an extensive dev diary deep diving into new feature sets but it's silly to expect that from this. Giant Bomb isn't the NMS PR team.

They're just jumping in and checking it out. As advertised.

If you came to Giant Bomb for in-depth reviews of games, you are definitely not in the right place. Giant Bomb has always been first and foremost about fun, interesting journalism and video streams. I come here for the humor and the appealing way they look at video gaming.

If you've been here for a while, you should know already that their streams of games that don't have "Quick Look" in the titles are going to be sit downs of some of the staff having fun with a video game. They are not meant to teach you anything about the game besides what they're showing you on screen. If you're interested in the game, come take a look and have fun. If you're just looking for answers to all your questions about the game, be a responsible adult and go look on Google. There are PLENTY of other resources about this game.

Stop bashing the guys and mentioning that Waypoint has "a better look at the game" or "Austin explains things better". Austin's a great guy, but you should not be here to compare the two websites. It's not a competition. Ya'll just need to understand what this website and this stream is all about.

I'm enjoying this update a lot more than I thought it would. All the little parts are slightly broken, especially the third person and the multiplayer, but it all adds up to something good. Not "great", but definitely good. Kind of the ideal podcast game.

The general gameplay loop is very different from when it launched, and it's actually not very grindy once you get past the early game floundering and start to know what you're doing. The life-support/hazard-protection upkeep isn't too heavy unless you're on extreme weather planets, which is kind of the point I suppose. Generally unless you're building a massive base or repairing a large ship, you do need a lot of different resources, but you usually don't need a lot of each individual one, so it feels more like a hunt, than a slog.

I just restarted NMS again with this update. How can I get my character to look like Abby's?

Also, I get why people would want to build bases but I don't really get the point. Isn't the whole point of the single player experience to get to the center of the galaxy or track down the Atlas stuff?

When I played during Atlas rising, I never stayed on a planet more than like an hour. It was always, land get resources, find out a new place to go and never look back.

To look like Abby's character, you use one of the character customization terminals on the space stations. On the side that has all the tech vendors look for the circular metal platform with the blue console sitting near it and use that. She's playing as the Traveler race, using one of the robot heads.

I looked into the building bases stuff, it's actually kinda neat. For one you can farm useful and valuable resources, so it's another way to earn an income. Plus you can build a stargate to the planet and go to and from there from any other gate at your leisure. Also you can build more storage units if you are getting buried in resources. There's other benefits but I have the memory of a goldfish so it's all lost now, need to look it up again.

@gromzark: I didn't know about the Stargate stuff. That changes everything. Being able to easily go back to your base/home alone makes it all worth it.

The most appealing thing about No Mans Sly seems to be the story: of false promises and redemption through hard patch work. But it doesn't seem to materialize nor, I'm guessing, will it ever become a great game. With fading sales, the efforts and investments shall fade, as well.

Same thing thing happened to Starbound. It became a somewhat serviceable clone, constrained by it's initial lack of ideas. Whenever someone promises you the moon and stars... At least it's not a free-to-play MMO, but with the infinite grind it sure appears to unwind like one.

Maybe they could sell the engine to developers, who can create stories or game play in that colorful universe.

@heroicdrinkingsong: You could argue the same thing about any game based on crafting and survival. Which would mean that there's no point to Minecraft. At least this game has things to do now, where before it was literally just about space exploration. You get to build on and customize the environment around you.

I see the fanboys are out in full force claiming the game is "fixed" or "worth it" now. Most people who were not original satisfied with the game still won't be. It's fine that you need a little more to do because you were happy, but other dont just need more, they need better - and probably more in some other cased.

The only narrative of it finally being the game it should have been is ridiculous - it still is an early access title two years later. If YOU are ok with that and/or forgiving the lies (and yes, they DID lie, outright), that is fine, but please stop lying to other people or acting like you are a part of their marketing department. If you like it, then play it - stop attempting to sell the rest of us.

Of course, then there is that other group who 'wants to believe' - and that is not really a good mindset to be in. With anything.
