@Animasta: Phil Fish is an insane megalomaniac jackass who's been making a 2d platformer for 7 years, drunk on hype and adoration. Not sure why anyone's particularly incensed about his remarks today. Fez still looks incredible, and I'll happily play it, but yeah, don't listen to the man.

Is Polytron a friend of Giantbomb like Big Giant Games is, because otherwise, I am want to understand why this game is such a big deal. They have yet to show actual gameplay from what I can tell, and other than it looking about as graphically impressive as Echochrome/Dig'N'Rig w/ Mode 7, what am I missing?

Short version of it: Japanese developer asked what they thought of eastern developed games during the Q&A. Fish came right out and said they sucked and proceeded to lay into every reason why he thought Japanese games sucked while the guy just had to stand there and take it.

And then was a jerk about it on Twitter afterwards.

Which, you're welcome to your opinion on other forms of development strategies, but you shouldn't be a jackass about it, especially when you can't even manage to finish your OWN game.

That and because of his statements about Fez never coming to PC because he wanted to "preserve the sanctity" or some crap of the "console experience", even at the cost of sales, because the game was made to be played with a controller.

Trailers without gameplay aren't new. Plenty of trailers are purely cinematics or teaser images or live action or whatever. But this, this right here, this is some next-level shit.

@Animasta: I don't know if "racist" is a fair word to throw around here. If he said "all people of Japanese descent suck at game design" that would be one thing (and racist!), but that isn't what he's saying. He's just commenting on the state of game development in Japan, which ultimately is a comment on a specific group of companies and individuals, not on the Japanese people as a whole. If he were criticizing German games or British games in a similar fashion, no one would accuse him of being anti-German or anti-British.

Interesting. At the beginning of Indie Game: The Movie, Tommy (from Team Meat) says that "Halo and COD are shit games. I don't make shit games." Huge cheer from the crowd. It was the first public screening of the film, so I'd guess there were quite a few indie devs in the audience but... I feel like this whole GDC thing is just people disagreeing with his opinion.

And it's not racist. Racist would be more along the lines of saying "Japanese people aren't capable of making a good video game." Him saying his opinion about the state of modern development from that side of the world is just that, even if it was phrased in a really jerky way.

Oh, and I want to play this game so damn badly.

More importantly, that music is awesome.

There is not a single Japanese game better than this 2D platformer. FACT

I'm surprised someone else hasn't simply taken the idea behind this game and made a game to get it out before this actually comes out.
 
I'm curious about this, but all of the videos I have seen have just been rotating landscapes, which doesn't really say much about the game.
 
As for the Japanese thing, I'd like to say I agree with him, but the more I think about it, the more I realize they don't suck - it's just that Japanese and western tastes in video games are continuing to diverge, but some studios are trying to make Japanese-style games for the whole world, and it doesn't work like it used to. After FFXIII, I have no interest in ever playing another JRPG. I enjoyed Skyrim and Borderlands and Deus Ex and Mass Effect so much that I realized those games do RPG and RPG mechanics the way I want - I don't want to waste my time listening to soap opera melodrama bullshit during a video game, which pretty much makes playing another Final Fantasy game impossible. That doesn't mean that stuff doesn't fly in other parts of the world, but I don't think people here are looking for that anymore.
