That was weird. When they were trying to think of the Oz character's name, I was too. Literally came to the tip of my tongue milliseconds before they said it.

@rorie: You should give some exp bonus to specific players for feats like the arm dropping kill from the first episode and for getting the gem. Not huge amounts of exp, just enough to encourage creative play. Great DMing, keep up the good work.

You guys should summon Mr. Sark from LA up to San Francisco to do your DMing. I heard on the Nerd Poker podcast he wants to play some Pathfinder... and he's creative as shit with his DMing! No offense to Rorie of course, he's doing a great job. (also obviously Sark could never make it up there to DM, but it is my dream)

Oh man, if they didn't have Rorie... this would be an incredible thing.

pffff. @rorie is doing great!

I like Sark on Nerd Poker but he does that 'player leave the room if your character isn't there' and loves to have long painful player kills. Works with that group but would be awful here.

I actually REALLY love Spencer on Harmontown. He's been great at running a bunch of people who never played and or read a D&D book.

Man, it's good to be seeing more of Dave. I've missed having that duder on the site. And this, besides being the best thing on the site at the moment, completely plays into his strengths --- D&D cred and riffing with Vinny.

Not a fan of pen and paper rpg's - I guess i don't have the imagination required and I guess I'd still worry about the 'social implications' (which I shouldn't, I know, but hey) ; in saying that, this is some entertaining stuff.

Never played D&D so this might be an integral part of the game, but as a viewer, a thing that would make this better to watch, would be to cut out the preemptive math. I mean, just roll to see if you even hit the guy, then do the subsequent math for damage and so on. I think that would give this a way better flow.

Other than that, I'm really loving this feature!

I assume calculating possible outcomes of an attack is needed so they can choose which ability to use. More experienced players can probably do this much faster and in their head. But since most of them are doing this for the first time, it's understandable.

Heh. I'd consider myself as pretty open minded and somewhat geared into towards "nerdy" stuff - but I don't think I could get into table top stuff. I really respect people who do because there's a lot of imagination and creativity that's needed to be had to enjoy it properly - I think I just need some level of constraint to enjoy myself.

Best feature on the site, I feel bad for non subscribers who have no clue what they're missing out on. Rorie doing a great job DMing imo, it makes it more entertaining that they don't know all the rules and aren't being all anal about them so we get stuff like Vbomb's statue arm drops and disturbing troll king torture scenes :) Plus Rorie's incredulous laughs at Vinny's plans are infectious.

Just want to echo everyone's sentiment that this is downright amazing. All the guys mesh together to form a great group, but the biggest reason for the success of this crazy feature is Vinny and his ability to completely suck the potential negativity out of any situation. He's just an unbelievably positive and charismatic showman who makes this and the Dark Souls stuff way more entertaining than they should be.

I think I heard the idea of substituting different die rolls a couple times but that's a bad idea. Don't let anyone do it @rorie!

Explanation:

When you roll a d6 it has an equal probability of landing on each side, so it has an equal chance of landing on 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6. So over the course of many rolls you would expect a d6 to land on each side roughly an equal number of times.

Over an infinite number of rolls, you would expect the number of times each die landed on each value to be the same. So if you were to calculate the average value of a d6 roll over an infinite number of rolls it would be (1+2+3+4+5+6)/6 = 3.5, which is called the expected value.

If we rolled 2d6 we would expect 2x3.5 = 7, but if we rolled 3d4 we would expect 3x[ (1+2+3+4)/4 = 2.5 ] = 7.5, which is better on average.

Say we look at that d6 again. It could land equally on 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6, but what would 2d6 result in? For a total of 2 both dice must land on 1, but for a total of 3 there are two possible ways the dice can land: one on 1 and the other on 2 and vice versa, so two possible ways. If we go on in this fashion and add up all the possible ways one can reach each number we'd find that the values 7 and 8 have the most number of combinations with the number of combinations decreasing as the values increase and decrease away from 7 and 8 ending in one possible combination for 1 and 12. Hence when you roll 2d6, you're far more likely to have a value somewhere close to the expected value of 7.5 than you are a roll of 1 or 12.

If you plotted the number of combinations for each possible value you'd end up with a bell shape curve centered on 7.5, which is called a Gaussian curve and shows up in all kinds of statistics.

No Caption Provided

So when you use different dice with a matching maximum value, not only do the minimums not match, but also the expected value and distribution of resulting values differ.

Other uses:

Expected value is can be a useful tool to get a feeling for what is likely to happen in dice based games like Pathfinder. It can be easily calculated by taking the maximum value of a single die roll, adding 1, then dividing by 2. For multiple die rolls, simply multiply by the number of dice you're rolling. So if you have someone getting stabbed by a dagger with 1d4 of damage, you can expect 2.5 damage on average. For 2d4 you would expect 2x2.5 = 5 damage on average.

You can use this value to calculate many other things such as the expected number of rounds combat will last, how much damage over the course of 3 rounds is expected, and so on, but much of those calculations would be difficult to perform quickly in your head.

However, just knowing the likely result of rolls on average, while not the most accurate or precise measure, will at least give you a better feel for what is more likely to happen.

I wouldn't surface the rules so much as a DM. Just decide how well role-played/probable a player action is and then come up with a roll and just inform the players about the outcome of the situation. Makes the whole process more natural.

true but you could also argue that surfacing the rules so much helps people understand them better and so they will make better decisions (well, in theory. Vinny is very unique after all). It's helping me understand at least.
