As someone who never seemed interested in Monster Hunter, I like the look of this one, looks like a lot of the quirks that put me off have been refined.

I was lucky enough to be one of the two extra hunters on this stream for the last two missions (my character name was "Keigo Onishi," which I ripped from a character in an anime called Texhnolyze). Always thought it would be fun to appear on a Giant Bomb stream, so I'm glad I got to cross that off my bucket list!

This game looks great and it warms my heart to see Jason excited that someone else in the crew is enjoying Monster Hunter.

I really hope Monster Hunter World is what finally cracks the Giant Bomb crew. They've been, as a whole, so dismissive of such a great series. I maintain hope that this will change someday.

cc @unastrike

I'm only getting game audio through my right speaker/earphone, but voice in both. Weird.

EDIT: oh you totally fix it during the stream. By... touching the cable? Cool....

Glad to hear they're adding friend invites. I was 99% sure the ID stuff was just for the beta but it's just... reassuring.

As someone who had the opportunity to play each and every MH game, I just find the gameplay loop not exciting and hunting monsters boring. Maybe I am not the patient type of gamer, but man watching Jason and Co hacking and slashing away 1 monster for 15 was boring to watch

It's not for everyone and that's okay, I personally love just going out to gather and hunt, get the materials for my new weapons or armor. It's the perfect game for just hanging out with friends or have a podcast or show on in the background.

BTW we spoke to Capscom people yesterday while they were streaming and the 20 minute timer thing was 100% put in to cycle players faster so that they can stress test servers.

I think the full timer in the final game is probably to prevent players from learning very bad habits that they think are the right way to go about it, but that would drag out fights to take multiple hours. Like if you hit timers in a normal MH game it's because you're doing something fundamentally wrong with the specific monster, environment, techniques or your (type of) gear.

In my first MH game I got owned by a great jaggi (I know, the shame). And after hitting the timer twice because I started playing very cautiously, I stopped to think about what I was doing wrong or whether the game was just plain bad. (Almost put the game away, too.)

I took one more round to focus on how the great jaggi attacked (instead of focusing on what I was doing), especially its big sideways shove that took like half health, and I suddenly saw how it wanted to move sometimes and I started to punish it. And I murdered it and it felt awesome! To any experienced hunter the fight must have looked pretty silly but to me it felt like the battle of the ages.

That's when I got hooked. (And it's why I love solo MH as much as online.)

I tried the beta and It was also my first experience of any Monster Hunter and I love it. Lots of people told me there are small similarities to one of my favorite games - Dragon's Dogma and I can see that. Combat feels a bit heavy and will take some time getting used to but I'm definitely going to pick it up! I was extremely impressed with monster animations, they not only look but move cool.

When I could get it to work I really enjoyed MHW. I thought it was cool that I got stuff for the full retail game for completing each of the quests. Definitely some weapons I liked way less than others.

@sweep: when in doubt jiggle the cables.

This looks really fun but I’m not sure how long the loop can sustain my interest without some bigger objective than simply crafting cooler armor.

I’m at a point in Origins where I just want to finish the story and similarly have had enough of the gameplay loop, but at least there is a story to work towards a finite end.

Not a question for Sweep here specifically but IS there some end goal or story in these games?

@humanity: The story mode in the previous games was a single player set of missions that served largely as a tutorial and the best place to get your bearings since all the monsters were scaled for a single hunter. It tended to end right around the time you'd be expected to jump into the Guild Hall, which is both the meat of the game and also the area with a multiplayer focus. They're saying the story works differently this time and that it's integrated into what we would think of as Guild missions, so it's hard to say quite how far into the progression it'll stretch, but I'd put bets on it 'ending' about halfway through the list of quests.

Beyond that though, there is a measurable form of progress to these games, the following only applies to previous titles as I'm not sure what the new structure is. Guild Quests are split into three types: Low Rank, High Rank and G-Rank. Low Rank is pretty easy and a solid multiplayer alternative to learning the ropes and getting introduced to each zone and a fair amount of monsters. High Rank gets rid of certain crutches such as always spawning at camp with a map, instead distributing the four hunters each in random zones, with the maps being located back at camp, and less overall free 'just in case you forgot to bring a cool drink on the desert map' items in the camp chests too. In other words, High Rank assumes a higher level of ingrained knowledge and methodology on the part of the player. G-Rank is where things get pretty intense, ideally tackled with a full team of four that know their weapon, know the zones and know how to work together. Each rank has their own version of every armour set, although some sets are only obtainable on higher ranks. In other words, any G-Rank armour set will completely eclipse any High Rank set - these are the largest leaps in player power in the game.

Every quest also has a star rating, with quests naturally beginning the start of a rank at 1 star and gradually increasing towards the end of the rank. Not all quests are required to progress to the next rank, something I hope they surface more in-game this time around. In other words you kind of have main quests and side quests, with the side ones often being a little harder such as "Kill These Two Monsters You've Only Ever Fought 1v1". The high star quests in G-Rank are where the 'dragon' monsters tend to exclusively be. If you wanted an equivalent of an end game boss, they pretty much fill the role with unique music, arenas and mechanics.

I think most people try to hit the end of G-Rank and then decide if they want to try other weapon types or just have it be a kind of fun co-op chillout game with friends. If the idea of making your way up the hunter ranks to fight some magic dragons does not appeal, you'll probably taper out near the end of High Rank, at which point the value proposition of Monster Hunter is considerably lower. It's really an individual thing.

@humanity: MH games have a progression of quests balanced for solo players for you to follow that are also usually tied together loosely with a skeleton of a story that never really amounts to more than 'This monster almost killed you at the start of the game, go take revenge!' or 'The village is in danger! Go hunt the attacking monster!'. There is still the end goal though of reaching the end of the quest progression essentially, which will lead you to hunt increasingly more dangerous monsters. Reaching that end is intended to have you then move into the quests balanced for multiple players which themselves have increasing ranks of difficulty with an eventual end.

That being said, I remember reading an interview about this game where the developers claimed that they're going to put more focus on the story for this game. Honestly, I wouldn't expect much but they have been adding more fleshed out NPCs in recent MH games so it's not entirely without hope.

@humanity: To add to mustachio's great explanation, there was a trailer in the middle of the recent Playstation Experience opening show that showed off some of the story and cinematic experiences that will be in the game, as well as a look at one of those "Elder Dragon" bosses.

Loading Video...

Plus, even if you taper off around high-rank, supposedly the game is gonna have the most monsters and content in it out of any MH game, according to the devs, so there'll still be a decent value proposition (most likely, might be worth waiting until it comes out to confirm something like that if you're on the fence). Part of the loop is also seeing new, fiercer monsters and figuring out their behaviour and gimmicks.

The constant loading of new sections of the past games is what always turned me off. And, over the years I go the impressions the game mechanics were more complex than they needed to be. However, this is looking good and seems to have fixed or re-thought most the thing that were keeping me away.

Tough to say, this one seems the most accessible one yet, but there's still a very particular way the fighting with the various weapons work, it's very "weighty" and animation priority heavy, plus how harsh the most demanding hunts can get; I absolutely love the shit out of this thing, but it's definitely not for everyone.

Hopefully they'll have a "beta test" on PC as well so the people that are curious can give it a shot before buying.

@ultimaxe: FWIW, I blind bought Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate when it came out for the Wii U and had a great time with game. The movement is very deliberate and you will have some very frustrating failed hunts. But it can be a really rewarding game.
