I really hope they address their archaic party system before bringing this to the PC. Not only is it difficult for no reason, it makes no sense! If someone joins then leaves, that spot is forever taken and no-one can join in their place. Just...why?

That aside, it's good to see them on MH!

I can understand why Ben and Brad are having all this trouble understanding how the online works since they haven't played it for over a month and hadn't played all that much in the first place, but Jason has over 200 hours in and doesn't understand how the online works. It's a little obtuse at first, but everyone I know who plays the game got the hang of it after a couple hours. It's really not as complicated as they make it out to be.

It's certainly not a good system and I'm not excusing that, but it's really not "that" complicated. It's just poorly explained and a bit obtuse.

Once player sees the cutscene, and saw the message SOS is available, he or she can just leave the quest and start quest over. By that time, players can just simply group up at the beginning without the cutscenes.

Man it seems like everytime I hear about the online portion of this game I just hear worse and worse things. If someone leaves that slot if permanently lost AND the monster stays buffed? What the fuck...

Yeah, I was in a tempered Deviljho hunt and every one left, Jho still scaled to multiplayer, all slots still seen as filled and no means to use a new SOS.

There was nothing wrong with the 3DS lobby system and I don't see how they could have messed that up, you only need to improve a little bit on the previous system.

I am glad to see a fellow Insect Glaive user in Ben. Though I have recently picked up Lance and Hunting Horn after 300 hunts with Glaive. It gets crazy how different all the weapons feel.

The multiplayer sucks but it isn't that hard to deal with once you understand it.

The new player just has to see the cutscene and return to the gathering hall, and then you can start the quest as a team like normal. Its unfortunate how they did that, but luckily its just for the story quests and that is only 15-20% of the game (if you're playing all the content).

I'm sure they'll fix the multiplayer weirdness in the next one at least.

@xeiphyer: It really isn't as bad as they are making it out to be. It IS a bit obtuse but Jason should probably really understand it by this point.

Join a Quest is for people in your session. After Brad saw the cutscene this is all they needed to do (or they could have left the quest and restarted it as normal after the cutscene, like you suggest).

SOS is for the whole public. You never SOS if you are trying to get specific people into your game.

Getting in the same session is sometimes annoying, I admit. Also the whole "any party member joining permanently shapes the session" is super dumb. Though I have rarely ever had this mess up my games. In 150 hours I have only had like two or three leavers F things up. I just learned to never SOS 2-player quests.

I'm over 300 hours in and I don't either. I've mostly only SOSed for multiplayer.

That new Greatsword that Jason was using (and that you can only get during this event) not only looks cool, it's actually the best Greatsword in the game stats-wise. The trick is to not awaken the fire element and instead stick in an "elementless" jewel, which gives a blanket damage buff to any weapon with no elemental attack. Pair that with its high base damage, white sharpness, and managably bad affinity (-15%... could be a lot worse), and it's got the highest damage potential of any Greatsword in the game so far as I can tell. At least one point in handicraft helps, since its native white sharpness is vanishingly small.

I hadn't played Greatsword before now (I've been sticking to Hammer, Lance, and Bow), but I made this Greatsword and an armor set to go with it this afternoon and have had a pretty darn good time with it! If you want to check it out, start doing the 5-star event quest "Every Hunter's Dream" (HR8). You'll need five "Master Craftsman's Blueprint" from that quest to forge it and then upgrade it all the way.

To everyone surprised that Jason doesn't 100% know how to work the --truly poorly implemented-- multiplayer, I believe he's said in the past he's mostly played the game solo.

I'm at about 230 hours. I can safely state that the game's co-op grouping/joining systems are...bad.

I'm not one of these, "Well, it's always been like this. That's just MH!" types. This is my first one. I have no idea how it has been. I just find myself truly awestruck by how needlessly bad it is now.

This is how you join a friend and do quests with them:

1. Use your PSN or XBL friend list to join your friend in the game.

1. a. If you are already in an online session it will bounce you back out to the main menu and reload to connect. It can't just transfer you to that session directly.

2. Once it puts you in a friend's session, you or your friend need to post a quest.

2. a. You and your friend could try to join an ongoing quest via SOS flare but in order to do so you'd have to both find the exact same one using the game's limited search filters and join before it fills up (or else be greeted with a "Join Failed" error message and be bounced back out to the post/join quest menu, at which point you'll have to put together the filter again).

2. a. I. By the way, you won't see whether the party is actually full until you join and it shows who is in it with you, because the listing that appears from the search only updates at the initial search. Also if you see people listed as "left party" or whatever, keep in mind those spots can't be refilled.

2. b. When posting a quest you need to make sure you set a passcode or have the option to approve quest join requests on. Otherwise anyone from the session can just jump in. There is no "friends only" or "squad only" option there. The only way to have such a limitation is to start with a private or squad-only session.

3. Once you and your friend are in the same quest group you can prepare and/or go into standby. Then once it loads...something...you fly off and it...loads again.

4. If you fail the quest for any reason, you will be given 10 seconds to choose between going back to camp, gathering hub, or headquarters. There is no direct "retry" option. Rinse and repeat.

4. a. If you were not the quest leader but opt to go back to camp, keep in mind only the original quest leader may post a new one. You will not be able to. Even if everyone leaves and leadership gets passed to you, you will not be able to. You may only go on an expedition from that point.

This shit is mad dumb.

Here's what it should be:

  • Allow players to party up (public, private, or squad-only, capped at 4 players) with friends outside of a session and take that party of friends to a populated session together all at once.
  • While in a session, allow people to join you in a party either from the session itself or from outside, as long as there's space (using PSN or XBL menus, if necessary).
  • Allow members of the party to launch quests for the entire group or to find SOS flares to bring us all to together.
  • If the quest is an investigation capped at 2 players either let the leader pick their partner from the party or pop up a message saying, "Too many hunters for this investigation."
  • If someone has to get to a cutscene before we can join, use the headquarters/camp 'loading quest' menu to show the members actively on the quest and those waiting to join.
  • If a quest/investigation fails, allow us an option on that HQ/camp/hub list to retry directly with the same group. Any member who selects "retry" will reload the quest and be brought back to their selected camp to restock and eat for that second attempt. Anyone else goes to their destination of choice as usual. In the case of an investigation, the 'retry' option doesn't show unless the owner of said investigations selects it, provided they have retries left.

The online stuff (with friends at least) is nowhere near as complicated as these guys make out. SOS flares are for playing with randoms only! Playing with friends is pretty straightforward once your'e all in the same session. The cut scene thing is dumb though.

This. Like yes it needs to be improved, but they exaggerate it so damn much. Just start a session and give them the session codes. Done.

I hope this is the start of a weekly monster hunter series Murder Island style. You could even get Dan or Vinnie in on it too.

As other people have said the best way to do a quest together that people haven’t done before is for everyone to see the cutscene then quit and start the mission fresh together.

Brad and Ben also probably had some optional quests they could have done that wouldn’t have required any cutscene business.

It was also weird that Jason was giving out wrong info to Brad and Ben about game mechanics too. Like after 200 hours he didn’t know that the powders effect everyone in the zone, you don’t have to stand next to people.

@benpack@unastrike@brad You can go into settings and turn on an option to let the host choose who can join the quest (you'll get a popup telling you someone wants to join then you'll go into your join requests and either accept or decline them).

Or the guys sitting in the lobby whose sole purpose is to just help their friend who is the main focus of the stream can just sit on the quest and it will become joinable without refreshing.

I hear you, this was a super annoying stream. As much as it is weird to join up with friends, the having spots taken on your quest isn't really an issue unless you are a popular streamer with a dedicated fanbase dying to get into your game. I have put over 500 hours into this game, and while not intuitive, the options that would have alleviated their issues were literally staring them in the face.

I think its unfortunate that people are willing to give this game a pass for its horrible multiplayer...it's completely unacceptable in 2018 to not have a streamlined multiplayer system....this problem was solved LITERALLY a decade ago! Unacceptable CAPCOM!!!

@pogo: It isn't perfect, but they made it WAY more complicated than it needed to be in this stream. It's still one of the best games I have played in years.

I am honestly surprised Jason didn't have a better grasp of it, given he is the big player of it.

Just completed the mission you get at HR 100, to slay a tempered Teostra, tempered Nergigante and tempered Kushala Daora within 50 minutes. It was... actually kinda easy. I think we finished it in 28 minutes.

The elder dragons in this game are a little too easy. I think the first time you're told to kill the Anjanath continues to be the "hardest" quest I've encountered in the game, simply because you're so under-geared at the time.

I love this game, but the system for playing with randoms is the absolute worst I've ever seen (the SOS Flare system).

Especially when you're in the late-game, farming tempered elder dragons. Here's how my time goes:

- Select 9-stars and "Investigation" from search criteria, then whatever monster I'm looking for

- Hit Search, and get told "no games found". Do it again and again, about six times.

- It finally finds a result or two, which you try to join as quickly as humanly possible.

- It says it can't join, but doesn't say why (probably because a dozen people all frantically tried to join at the same time). Or even better, sometimes it sits there for like 45 seconds, before saying it.

- You have to re-enter the search criteria from step one, and try again. Rinse and repeat, until eventually you get in a group.

And that's just to get in. Then, in my experience, half your group doesn't bring flash pods, and runs around with 15% health tempting fate because they are being cheap with their max potions and want to stand in a health booster instead.

They couldn't just put in matchmaking for randoms? Did they assume only friends would play the multiplayer? It's a testament to this game, that I've been putting up with the above scenario for about 50 hours now.
