I'm giddy for all the love Fleischer Studios is indirectly getting through Cuphead. I've been a fan of their Popeye cartoons for years because their animation style is so different from Disney & Warner Bros (although WB got close a few times).

Mega Man X didn't have dash on Y, it had dash on A. That answer about the controls makes no sense, what gives??

I love Brad's love of old Geocities gifs and their ilk.

Also: another goddamn game to play in 2017. Damn fine year, maybe too fine.

Interesting that the star of the show - the graphical style - wasn't the kickoff point for this project.

Even with the audio problems this was some of the best content this site has produced this year.

I would love to see more of this.

Props to my fellow concrete workers. No idea how they found the energy to work on a game like this after a long day's work.

Fantastic! Great insights into one of the best games I've played this year.

Funny to hear Jeff get excited to talk old games. Finding your peeps is never not charming.

One of their mics was too low, yeah, but you can make out what he's saying if you listen closely. Not ideal, but the video isn't ruined.

I'll take Rex talking subtly in the background over the game audio being too loud.

How do you have the developers of the game on and not ask the most important question: What's up with Mugman drinking from his own straw during his idle animation?

This was fun, and yeah like Brad said, very unexpected tale of how they came to developing this but man, what an inspiring story!

That was a great interview, 50 minutes felt like 10. So interesting to hear about the influences and how they came to this, and a happy coincidence that they share Jeff's enthusiasm for the master system.

I also completely agree with their design philosophy. It's a big draw that the artstyle is as amazing as it is, but what makes it worthwhile is the way it plays. You don't get the same thing if you start from the end of "I just want to imitate this cool old artstyle".

I find Cuphead to be an amazing game to watch and hear, but dreadful to play. I don't like anything about its gameplay. It feels just bad to me. I'm currently on the second island and I'm seriously considering just uninstalling the game. Nothing about the gameplay is strong enough to keep me playing, and the art style alone, while great, is not what I come to video games for.

I don't think it's a big deal, and it's a low hanging fruit, but there's a Spawn On Me episode from 2 weeks back with the exact same name as this.

They start a new file and play through the game as they talk, so you can just check out if they come to a boss you haven't played. They don't talk explicitly about any single boss, though, just abou the development and their influences in general.
