Help me out over here: Why is everybody crazy for what seems like a rather casual tower defense game on the iPad from EA? I'm not saying you shouldn't be or anything but I can't even count the number of people complaining on this very website about:

A) A game being to casual

B) A game being a tower defense game

C) iPad games

D) EA

But combine all of the above and everybody loves it?

I dunno seems like a bunch of people complaining in here. I'm not because

A) I don't care if it's considered 'casual'

B) I like tower defence and had a great time with the first PvZ

C) I like a ton of people own a iOS device

D) I don't go in for the 'EA IS THE WORST COMPANY IN THE WORLD' rhetoric that seems to go around.

@thesoutherndandy:

Just to clarify: I don't have anything against this game or EA, or iPad etc. I personally don't care about Tower Defense but whatever. I'm just legitimately curious why people like this game so much, while it seems like everybody is hating stuff like Angry Birds (with a passion), F2P games, microtransactions and the other stuff I mentioned. It's just a bit baffeling to me, nothing more.

@abendlaender: Yeah not too sure what the difference there is. Personally I like TD games way more then whatever AB is classified is but they do seem to scratch similar itches. If I had to guess, PvZ has a bit more going on mechanically then AB does plus the fact that it originated on the PC probably helps a lot with perception.

@abendlaender: Yes, there are many people complaining in this very comments section that this sequel is a F2P IOS exclusive published by EA. The first game (which was good) wasn't any of those things, originally.

I loved Plants Vs Zombies because it was a good game. Don't really care if it a tower-defense game or "casual" (god, what a bastardised term).

That said, immediately turning me off of this game to reveal it as an iOS exclusive.

I have to admit, I'm genuinely excited for this time sink. The first game taught me not to judge a book by its' cover.

Not digging the 3D art here. I really hope the game doesn't look like that. I absolutely, unequivocally hate the notion that "3D art is automatically better than 2D art".

Artists did not stop painting just because sculpting was invented.

Wow... just wow. The sequel to a popular originally PC game coming iOS only and free-to-play? That is just about the worst thing I can think of for me about the sequel I've been waiting for so long for. I don't own or want a iOS device. Hope it comes to the PC eventually where I can just buy it. Although I now have my doubts.

It's PopCap. It will get on every platform eventually. Question is if you can wait +4 years that it takes PopCap to do ports of their games.

Have they even shown any gameplay? How do you get that sense after watching a pre-rendered trailer?

Anyway, it's exclusive on iOS, so I won't be playing it.

Looks cool, too bad I don't have any iOS devices and avoid F2P microtransaction games.

Hopefully they'll put out a full paid version of the game on Steam at some point as I'd love to play it.

There's even more Android devices. By almost double. Not sure why the 500 mill number is relevant.

The downside with Android devices is that most people who get apps on there would be free or they would be pirated. Also even with the free games, devs see very little ROI via in-app purchases in the Android market, that's why devs would usually opt to make it in iOS first.

I am familiar with the fact that people on iOS devices spend more money than on Android devices. I have a Windows Phone myself and I'm not campaigning for it to come to Android.

What I don't understand is why they would limit themselves completely to iOS (assuming iPhone and iPad), while ignoring all other options. I'm not talking other phone options, I'm talking all options. That is; Vita, PC, consoles and other devices.

I see no logical reason to do so. I don't make games myself so maybe I just don't know what I'm talking about and it's really hard to hit multiple platforms at once? I was assuming for a game like this that isn't really an issue.

The only reason I see for this is that Pay2Win is a viable business model on iOS devices apparently. That's two dick moves in one.

The only reason I see for this is that Pay2Win is a viable business model on iOS devices apparently. That's two dick moves in one.

Here's the thing let's not assume that the one platform release is a "dick move" on their part since this just assumes that we understand the business as a whole and how they do it. Sure it's better that they go on mutiple devices etc. on the get go but remember when they released the first PvZ they started on the PC and it took awhile before it went on other devices. Now you might probably say, wait they are a big developer plus they are now owned by a big publisher, etc. Keep in mind they also have other games that they are managing such as Bejeweled Blitz, which could also have been factor in going free to play since they found it to be profitable as well as in other EA franchises, particularly sports. Now, whose to say they aren't going to make versions in other devices in the long run. For the most part they might have gotten a co-marketing deal with Apple to advertise it as an exclusive perhaps for the first year or two- we just don't know for sure.

Now the real problem for me (and what I would really consider a dick move) is that if this game is ONLY free to play and would be forced to just do micro-transactions to get even more out of it. For the most part if they do that, I don't think someone like Jeff Green is going to stay too long in the company if ever the kinds of microtransaction systems they'll employ is the same as just about every social game on Facebook. That to me is even more gross. I hope this isn't the case though and hopefully someone can correct me or tell me that this would indicate other wise. I'd rather buy the game wholesale instead of getting it free and reaching a point that I have to pay again and again.

EDIT: Looks like the creator of PvZ George Fan was laid off last year from PopCap. Something tells me that this isn't going to bode too well. Also there is already a PvZ social game in the form of PvZ Adventures so they probably have already experimented on the idea and found it to have been successful... :/ I just hope that when PvZ2 comes out they do it in such a way that it is not disruptive to the gameplay experience. Perhaps the model would be similar to what Capcom did with Ghost Trick and Ace Attorney, which is first few chapters are free and you'd have to pay for the rest, or with Fruit Ninja when they have the full and Lite versions. I hope that you do get the option to pay for the full game and not just microtransactions.

Why the fuck is this not coming to pc right away? Thats some bullshit.

The true bullshit is why it is coming to iOS exclusively. I don't like Apple products and I do not see a reason why this, or most other mobile games for that matter, should be iOS exclusive. It's not like iPhones can do more than other phones. It's not like Apple owns the rights to those games. As far as I know, no deals are made either. I could be wrong about that stuff, but that's how I understand it.

Seems like purposefully ignoring a large part of your potential user base. Not only dumb, but also a dick move.

So true. Developers say they don't make any money on android games yet only release shitty ports of old games. Shitty ports of old crap never makes any money on any platform.

I want this so bad. I don't care if it has micro-transactions. The Facebook game has them and I have avoided them so far so it really makes no difference if it has micro-transactions or not.

Plants vs. Zombies 2 is built upon the original fascinating tower defense formula, but adds a time travel twist, which allows you to take a crazy journey with Crazy Dave as you exterminate waves of zombies in mysterious Ancient Egypt, perilous Pirate Seas, and dusty Wild West.
