Prepare Yourself for Shelter 2: More Shelter

That may or may not be the actual tagline, but the sequel does involve a lynx and a newly created open world.

I loved the look and the music in the first game. I wasn't all that fond of it though. It was a nice distraction, but I never felt compelled to return to it despite all of my baby badgers getting killed.

-30 min long game

-no reason to keep the young ones alive (that was the MAIN goal on the journey..but you can let all die. yes sometimes it restart but most of time it did not so deeath to the children and you could not die except from hawk..)

-no point in hunting or even find food

-buggy or hazard that don't do jack (river and forest fire)

-funny to see the young badgers grow twice ytou size and still follow you...

only thing I could say atleast the hawk did work, but they really need to put more work into shelter 2 as it was lazy and quite low quality.

BUT I would love to see the game if they put more work into it can be great

Lynx are way more badass than Badgers. This is pretty much an instant upgrade over the first game.

Is this related to that game about the badgers (or whatever they're called; I can't remember the name right now)?

I dunno, Shelter was lacking some substance? I don't mind short games but it really didn't make me feel good or bad at the end which made me forget about it completely.

I'm surprised as anyone to see this because I thought the first game pretty much fell into obscurity right after release.

Usually I like Art Gamesâ„¢, but I thought Shelter was just too shallow. The entire game is just the combination of two things people hate 1) stealth and 2) escorting.

Usually because you're escorting something with an AI that's not I at all. Badger cubs are better than AAA games.

Actually really liked the first but it needed to strike a chord with you to really work, can definitely see why most people would consider it forgettable. I'm on board with this even just for the aesthetic alone, though, that's gorgeous.

I wouldn't say I had a lot of fun through the first game but I also beat it because I wanted my baby badgers to be safe and that was the driving force behind continuing. I lost one right at the very end and was so mad at the game because it felt extremely cheap the way it happened. And then the ending made me feel defeated. Like I just gave up. It was bittersweet.

I'll look into this sequel but I'm hesitant since I didn't exactly enjoy the first game but I'll likely want to get my lynx cubs to safety.

I really enjoyed the first one, thought it was an emotional roller coaster that had its hooks in me from pretty much the start. I felt very invested in keeping all of my little children safe and when I failed it was absolutely gut wrenching. I'll certainly buy the second one in support of the developers, but I don't know if I can handle playing it again.

That's a really fast turn-around! I guess once your toolbox is set, at least for a less-demanding game like Shelter (and I don't mean that in a demeaning way at all), it's much easier than usual to create scenarios and assets.

Also, dang, do these look visually fantastic!

Oh man, the first game was rad. I named all of my badgers based off of their fur patterns. It was so sad when I lost Armin. He was my favorite, even if he did always try to steal food from his siblings.

I don't know if the lynx noises can live up to the badger yips and growls from the first game though...

Shelter 2: The Sheltering

Surprised to see a sequel to this, that is good since it is a fairly unique concept. The first one is one of those games I bought on Stream during a sale and have been meaning to try.

I really liked the idea of Shelter and even some of the ideas in Shelter, like the way it would remove hazards for a bit if you lost a cub so that you wouldn't get stuck on a section and lose every single one to a single obstacle. It also had the added effects of making the moment stand out while at the same time reinforcing the sense of defeat when you didn't even get to try to conquer the next few obstacles because the game had taken pity on you.

The ending was also really cool in that I realized that it would have had an entirely different tone had I not been able to save any of the cubs.

That said, I think the game had quite a few problems. All the obstcles you came across were solved the same way in that you stood still and waited for the right moment, and then sprinted to the next safe zone. Even with the game's short length of just over an hour it didn't feel like it had enough variety to it.

Food wasn't scarce. On a second playthrough I had more than enough food to keep all five cubs alive, it certainly took the edge off of things when even the max number of mouths to feed didn't lead me to have to make any tough decisions. That you didn't have to eat yourself was understandable, because they didn't want to have a fail state in the game. Yet I think the game could have been more interesting with some sort of mechanic where your abilities were affected if you didn't eat.

Lastly, most egregiously, two of the three cubs I lost my first time through I felt came not from failing a particular challenge but from not understanding some of the quirks of the cub AI. It just ended up feeling frustrating and unfair. A second time through having learned how to manage these quirks I had no problem keeping all five alive. (It is worth noting that the one cub I lost on my first time through due to a misjudgement followed by hesitation hit me a lot harder, I wish I would have lost them all that way.)

I'm definetly interested to see if they can fix some of the problems I had with the first one in a second game, because I still think that it's a really cool idea.

This is slightly confusing, with such a short development cycle, I would assume this is going to be more of a "How we wanted the first game to turn out before reality got in the way", than a true sequel. Either way, I think i'm excited, as long as the entire world isn't snow.

I don't remember hearing any buzz about the first game at all or any particularly outstanding praise. To see a sequel so soon without any of the former seems bizarre... Especially indies which rarely have sequels.

Man I wish games would drop numbered sequels and do what the Arkham games are doing more often. Opportunities for Shelters, Sheltered missed here, if you ask me.

Also, I could never really get into the first game. Beautiful to look at, and I got the vibe it was going for, it just never really clicked for me I guess.

I really liked the first game, although admittedly it was like 80% art style. I'm a sucker for great looking games (from an art design perspective, not a technical one). I'll probably play this, although honestly it's weird that this is getting a sequel. Is it really just going to be the same thing with a different animal species?

Well the game make you a god if you sacrifice the badger babies with starving 2 at same time. the game is not deeper than normal wildlife cycle...if you think more than that you read into to much.

Yeah, I'm super baffled that this sequel is happening. I'm sure Shelter 1 did alright enough for them financially, but I feel like it's pretty far towards the low end of indie game notoriety (even among artsy, emotional indie games) and I don't remember like any reviews really gushing about how good it was.

It seems like the definition of a one-and-done project and then the studio moves onto something else. Apparently they are just chock full of ideas where you're an animal and you lead your young around.
