And it makes you wonder why EA hasn't done something similar.

Because such a game would be hard to monetize for EA. Simple as that.

@arjann: How so?

99 cents to unlock double swarm missile count for 60 minutes.

1.59 USD or your regional equivalent to turn your silly looking VTOL into some cool cross-promotion Battlefield 4 VTOL?

1.29 USD or your regional equivalent for a COOL Dragon Age: Inquisition themed skin!

Also, what platform is that supposed to be? mobile devices?

Why wonder how EA would ruin this? Let's just be happy someone else is making it instead.

Because the segment of consumers who fondly remember the Strike games probably seems a lot bigger to those inside it.

I'm guessing the title of this video is referring to this series? This is the most relevant thing that came up in the database. I ask because I'm unfamiliar with the games being referenced.

Everything about this trailer makes me think that this game was made in 2003 and frozen in a cryogenic chamber not yet opened until now!

Man, those old Strike games were a blast. Yeah, where the hell did those go?!

This looks like a hell of a lot of fun.

40 seconds before we see gameplay, in a 1 minute trailer. That's a bit silly.
Game looks good though.

Yup, they were a series of top down helicopter shooters that were really popular on the SNES, Genesis and PlayStation 1. Had they been released today they'd probably have been dual joystick shooters, but since they were released on platforms that didn't have analog controls (yet, as the PS1 analog controllers came out around the same time as the last game in the series), they had their own control scheme that kinda enforced the feel of piloting a helicopter. Not quite sure how I'd want a new entry in the series to play today, that feel may be lost if they go with a regular dual joystick shooter setup.

This kinda seems to be more like those, with the fixed aiming reticule, though they also had a camera angle that was fixed to the ground instead of the helicopter.

Not the same unless it has the Desert Strike theme music.

Also fun fact, Brian Schmidt, the guy who did the music for both Desert and Jungle Strike, also did the music for Jeff's Genesis favourite, Crue Ball, and for of course, the one, the only, Black Knight 2000, among other selected works.

Cool, thanks. I'm surprised I never played one of these over my long gaming career (I use that word loosely :P). The helicopter controls sound similar to what I liked about Under Defeat, making it one of the few shmups I actually enjoyed (also helps that it's not insanely hard). I realize it's a different genre, but still.

Looked at the numbers from XBLA during 2011 and 2012, Jungle Strike '11 (aka Renegade Ops) reached 38k, which I find low for a product of that quality (5/5 according to @Brad's review) and pedigree (Just Cause 2).

It really makes you wonder if EA had the capacity to make it (assuming they ever cared to).

I miss those "Strike" games... I remember there was one for the Game Gear and having it on the go was the best thing ever as a kid. There was something so satisfying lifting those little humans into the heli.

@paulunga: Hahaha, wow, I've never heard that before. Did Brian Schmidt work on this version too? This sounds like it came out of an NBA Live game (which coincidentally I know he has one in his credits).

Everyone knows the Army Men Air Attack games were basically the spiritual successor to the Strike series just not as brutally difficult. Man, now I miss 3DO.

@heatdrive88: No idea, really. It's just what I grew up with. I was actually joking, the song's pretty ridiculous for a game where you rescue POWs and blow up terrorists.

@paulunga: Haha, you crazy Europeans and your Amigas.

For what it's worth, the music in Cannon Fodder was totally on point too, but much like the Desert Strike Amiga theme, sounds completely ridiculous for it's subject matter.
