This game seems like it has neat ideas and mechanics but is paired with boring level design. All the obstacles don't seems fun to overcome. They look like busy work. As if they were the more forgettable parts of a bigger game.

Actually *pushes up glasses* from my understanding the interaction strange quarks would have with other matter is, fortunately for us, not that simple and catastrophic.

What I believe the game is referencing is effectively the doomsday extrapolation or interpretation of the strangelet which is a lump of proportional up, down, and strange quarks. The doomsday idea goes that due to that particular arrangement and the Pauli Exclusion Principle, this collection of quarks can exist at a lower and therefore more stable energy state than the collection of quarks in a standard nucleus. The consequence is that hypothetically a collision with a nucleus will induce the nucleus to tend toward the lower energy state and be absorbed into the strangelet. As this keeps happening, the strangelet will continue to engulf whatever body of mass it was in or on until it grows into a hot lump of strange matter known as a quark star.

There are a number of good reasons why this, and especially the plot point in the game, is incredibly unlikely and largely theoretical. First is that strange quarks on their own are heavier quarks than the quarks which make up your standard hadron (neutrons and protons). The consequence for the strange quark by being heavier is that it's incredibly likely to decay into its lighter and much more common up and down quark counterparts before it does much of anything. The second is the construction of a strangelet itself which requires a critical threshold of strange quarks arranged amidst up and down quarks. What makes it unlikely is that even if there is a steady rate of strange quarks which are colliding and sticking to up and down quarks, many of those strange quarks will interact to become strange Baryons, which themselves are heavy particles which are likely to decay and disrupt the process. Therefore a really large number of simultaneous interactions, and lets not forget energy, need to occur to achieve a strangelet to reach that critical threshold. This is why even if this were a naturally occuring phenomenon, the time scale involved in building a strangelet is obscenely large. Like age of the universe time scale large.

But wait there's more. The third unlikelihood comes from the interaction strangelets would have with ordinary matter. Strangelets theoretically formed by cosmic ray collisions are predicted by most models to be positive charged which means that since atomic nuclei are positive charged due to protons, strangelets would be repelled by any interactions with nuclei. Granted high enough energy interactions can theoretically produce the negative charge strangelet which would indeed interact with protons but that assumes all these unlikely scenarios lined up and you had energy involved in the collisions to do it.

There is one exception to all this and yet still ends up showing where we are at with the strange matter hypothesis. Neutron stars. Neutron stars do not suffer from the same problem as proper atomic nuclear interactions since a neutron star is well, nothing but a collection of neutrons which aren't charged. Technically one could consider a neutron star a "quark star" in its own right since it's primarly just quarks. Anyway, a slightly easier to achieve positive strangelet could interact and absorb the mass of the neutron no problem if that's all it had in the vacuum of space. Thereotically there is nothing to say that a neutron star couldn't become a quark star without much issue but as of yet there is no evidence for any neutron star to have at the very least some strange matter on its surface based on x-ray observations of neutron stars. Finally we can consider that we have observed precious little of strange matter in the universe despite the incomprehensibly large number of high energy cosmic ray collisions that occur in the universe or even just our small chunk of it, every moment. If something like strange matter didn't have all these hurdles to make it unlikely, rare, or nonexistent, then the sheer number of collisions would have produced some amount of observable evidence of it.

So my reading of physics says there's not much to worry about from strange quarks.

Maaan, I really love some parts of how this game is, like, the combination idea's kinda neat, the actual art assets and character design are really solid along with the animation, the sound, voices and writing are alright if a bit over the top in some ways, butlike.. The level design looks like garbage. Like, both the visuals, that is, the art assets in the foreground, and the way it's in general put together poorly. That's not even to mention the weird uneven and janky parts of the walls filled with goop that adds to nothing but noise.

Schrödinger actually thought the idea that wave functions being affected at all by whether they're being observed or not was completely ridiculous, and the thought experiment which is now pretty much the only thing he's widely known for was supposed to drive that point home and ridicule the idea.

Hey gang, this is Kevin from Italic Pig, developer of SCatRotLQ. Glad to hear you (kinda) liked it, I'll take what sentiment I can from the your love of the physics, if not the controls (I'm a keyboard ninja myself).

On the subject of controls: Team17 set up basic controller remapping in the Unity config popup before you start the game (jump, attack, quarks, etc), but there isn't any in the in-game menu, sorry about that, and if you're in Linux, I don't believe that menu pops up. Anyway, we're working hard on improving controller support for future formats. It'd actually be really handy if you let us know how you'd like the controls default mapped - because of the wacky combo madness, usability testing is coming back pretty much 50/50. Can't please everybody, but we'd like to, so specific feedback from top gamers like yourselves would be handy.

@bacongames: I'm clapping too, huge thumbs up to the Strange Quark comment above. The fact that you recognised it from the LHC doomsday scenario did my heart proud - thank Higgs SOMEBODY got the joke. Get in touch with Italic Pig, I want to send you some Schrödinger Swag, we've been giving out kickass Alive/Dead coins at EGX London and will again at Play Expo Manchester, but you've earned a mailout.

To everyone else, here's a free Steam code (first come first served). Let us know what you think: N99B2-MZ8PF-KTE25

Thanks everybody, and may the Higgs be with you. -k.

Thanks duders :)

I feel remiss not to give credit where credit is due though and mention the channel SixtySymbols. It's a fantastic source of discussions and explanations of Physics concepts and developments in the field in extended but accessible fashion. I wouldn't have known to spot it and dig deeper on strangelts without 'em.

And thank you the gesture is very much appreciated.

Avatar image for italicpig
Posted By italicpig

@bacongames Well, that's my evening sorted. I was going to go fix those controller issues but now I think I'll just watch SixtySymbols until I pass out.

Seriously though, I'm really glad that my indie/physics title's getting talked about on sites like this, and that it's inspiring NEEEEEEEERDS like me to proudly get their nerd on, what better occasion is there? The video banter is hilarious - (okay, if the game wasn't mine it'd be hilariouser) - but overall I think it's awesome when there's a debate/discussion about the real, hard details... because that means I must've hit close enough to the real, hard details that someone thinks it's worth pointing out!

Gotta have a thick skin in this industry, and all a guy like me can do is ride the positives and patch the negatives in time for the next update, right?

So, @bacongames get in touch via italicpig.com (Schrö coin is on the blog now if you want to see it), and everyone else, read chapters 11 through 14 in your textbooks, there'll be a quiz.

Peace out, fellow nerds. -k.
