@Beld: Yeah, I agree. I feel that way too. I think that's a consequence of this game being a long time in development, when MMOs were subscription based. Since the model changed since then, they added the Store and like everyone else, I'm sure this game will go F2P a few months from now.

@crusader8463: You're right, appearance is a lot. I mean, that's the reason why RMT in MMOs work so much. The problem I have with your reasoning though is that there already IS a ton of options in the game. And the developers said that they intend to give the player even more options by adding more clothes (RM store and IG store) and more ways to personalize your character. Now if you want your dude to be EXACTLY like one of the characters from the Store then yeah, it's gonna be an issue. But I find it really fun to change your character's appearance depending on your progression, the rewards you get and even the place you are or if you're role-playing or not (I'm in Egypt so I changed my character's look to adapt to the weather there). There already are a lot of options available from the start is what I mean.

@JamesJeux007: @Schnarf: Because for me being able to make my guy look a certain way is just as important as powers and abilities. If I don't like the way he looks I can never get into playing as him or become attached.

same.

if you don't feel you have ownership of your character, i can't get into playing it either.

@crusader8463: Does that extend to every game with any type of paid anything? DLC, RMT, expansions?

There is no "hey pay to get this" pop-up in Secret World. The store is never mentioned and it is accessed by using a menu that is rarely used. The store and the things on it are as removed from the game as they can be, you have to go looking for them to find them. The in-game options for customizing your character greatly out number what the RMT store has. But if it really is a case of "If I have to pay REAL money for those pink bunny slippers to complete my character, WTF?!" Then I can't help you. The game really is something special, and I just think it is a shame to miss out on it over something so trivial.

Or it could be that the dudes aren't into Lovecraft. King does a ton of his shit in New England, so it's an easy connection to make if that's your frame of reference. It's not the original reference, like Lovecraft, but it's not like it's the worst thing ever.

Oh this is funcom. As long as they are making games that have illuminati type shit, hey where's the next Dreamfall/TLJ game????? Cuz hearing them talk about this game kinda reminded me of that. But just in a man I should play through those again kinda way.

Looks like pretty standard MMO fare, although Jeff's praise of the writing and character stuff was interesting to me at first.

I think what's turning me off right now is that it's mostly just ho-hum real-world stuff. A game like an MMORPG that you're likely going to put more hours into, traversing the same areas multiple times, I feel like having such a grounded environment would get dull a lot quicker than something more fantastical/sci-fi.

No thanks. The combat looks dumb, the premise that this stuff is "secret" when its happening right in everybody's face is dumb, and in general the thing just seems pretentious.

Look, I agree that on the surface it seems to be pretty same-y. But what, exactly, is striking you as "pretentious?"

I swear, that word needs to be stricken from people's vocabulary, especially as pertains to video games.

Deus Ex did the same thing with conspiracy theories , but not as a thing it's-self so much as to present political and sociological philisophical questions and quandries applied to life. Thus rule by an Enlightened Dictator, rule by a Privileged Few aware of maintaining the Underclasses that provides, Rule by the Many, and Individual rights (Anarchy).

Not impressed with how this looks....

Hmm... same thing I thought when I looked at The Old Republic (and pretty much any MMO with an interesting setting, story, or mechanics these days). I wish they made it a focused single player game and chopped out the fluff and grind.

Just a suggestion on QLs in general: Love the format of watching guys play through a game as if I'm watching my friends play through a game, but why all the focus on the game's menus up front? Most QLs have a menu-heavy based start and it's more annoying than anything. Just jump into the game, I'll see the menus if the context ever comes up, but I don't care about seven ability trees before I even know what abilities mean (and spending an hour explaining every ability isn't entertaining either). I usually just skip ahead 10-20 minutes in QLs, but I'm wondering who likes the menu stuff anyway. I say cut it, guys.

I like a lot going on there. The setting, the writing, the references everywhere. I just don't like MMOs enough to pay a monthly fee for them though. So...see you in about 6 months, The Secret World.

That is exactly what they tried with the old republic and the result was you got nothing to do and no reason to log on again. An mmo simply needs busywork and the threadmill system otherwise people will give it up after a month cause they seen everything. However you can camouflage and adjust it so it looks more interesting. Another huge aspect in mmo's is the community. You come for the game and stay for the people. So having it more focused on single player would once again just not make it an mmo anymore.

What you are looking for is not an mmo but a single player game.

Also i am really curious at how Giantbomb will recive guild wars 2.

Oh, that's exactly what I'm saying. I wish they made an actual single player game instead of chasing the MMO gold and building in the annoying MMO trappings. An action-RPGish game with this setting sounds awesome and I'd pay $60 for it. An MMO, not so much.

It seems to have become one of those words that wannabe critics use just because they've heard it from other people who seemed to know what they were talking about, regardless of its actual meaning. Sort of like how some people refer to all electronic music as "dubstep" all of a sudden.

I don't know what this word means, but from the way other people use it, I think it fits here, so I'm gonna go with it!

I think that's what he was saying. He doesn't like MMOs.

I don't, either, honestly. I'm REALLY interestd to see how the Elder Scrolls Online does, because people HAVE a single player version that they could arguably play forever. Why grind and treadmill when you don't have to? You can say it's "for the social interaction", but I go outside for that. Is this only an attractive concept for people who can't make friends in real life?

Maybe even something along the lines of Skyrim or The Witcher 2 with a fleshed-out co-op feature? That'd be cool. I've always thought that the basic structure and "gameplay" of MMORPGs have been utterly boring and uninspired at best, exploitative of compulsive tendencies in players at worst. Progression for the sake of progression without any meaningful change in gameplay, if any gameplay beyond menu navigation really even exists in the first place.

I'll try not to make this a sweeping criticism of every Blizzard game ever made. And I'll fail.

WoW has one too.

$25 for mounts.  $10 for a pet that you can then sell on the AH for gold.
