Missed it due to the delay, let's see how it went.

The aspect ratio really worsens the experience for me in The Evil Within. Messes with my perception, difficult to get immersed in it as much and actually see what's going on. Does anyone actually like it?

You can force different ratios but then you zoom the game in too much and you can't change the FOV. Will probably give the game a rest for a while and hope some kinda fix comes out.

@nonesun: I can't imagine anybody is 'happy' about it, but I suppose it serves a purpose, at least on the console versions. Word is it's pretty choppy on the consoles and like Brad said on the new Bombcast, the limited aspect ratio lessens the fillrate load and probably saves the frame rate from being worse than it is. I can't imagine it's something that further optimization couldn't overcome, but I guess at some point you've just got to make some tough choices and get the game out the door.

The letterboxing completely kills the immersion. I feel like I'm looking through a window at the game instead of being immersed playing as the character. Not to mention your character takes up a third of the area you do have left making it even that much harder to tell what the hell is going on.

None of this seems fun.

"Maybe your just chasing yourself" was my first thought too. I wonder if we are right.

And on ps4 when I played the shadow from the fence at 21:32 was totally fucked up, anyone else notice that? it just looked like a bunch of loose unconnected X-es on the wall. Pretty sad.

I haven't looked into the game or anything but It seems fairly obvious what's going on. Hopefully there's more to it then this but I'm getting a Shutter Island vibe from this game. Everything seems to blatantly point to this all being in your head right from the title of the game. The fact that you wake up in a mental institute to do upgrades, or the fact that you travel from there back into the other world using mirrors symbolizing looking within yourself to find the monsters etc. I hope the story isn't as obvious as this though and that these are red herrings to throw you off what is really going on but idk.

Missed the stream due to the delay, so I'm interested inhow Scoops feels about TEW.

I'm currently at Chapter 6 and it feels like a lot like RE4 with a creepier atmosphere. I'm still enjoying my time with it.

I don't know Patrick, I died once during that intro because I got too impatient.

I really like this game.

Man, crippling the character's leg so he moves at half speed AT THE BEGINNING OF THE GAME seems f'n terrible.

Too bad Patrick is committed by procedure to the beginning of the game. I get the idea The Evil Within turns on after a couple of hours in, he may want to second try later. At least I am going to buy it on that premise later on down the road. I could see why it pissed him off as far as enjoyment and entertaining the viewers. Good effort in just getting it going last night

Obviously Patrick didn't watch the QL before playing this. "I've played this, here's what's going on" is not how one would describe that Bran Shoemykert escapade.

@lashe: I'm also glad they talk about this stuff, and upgraded my monthly subscription to yearly after this as well.

Back on the rest of the video, I found the opening to Evil Within really offputting, but I did find the gameplay opened up and got fairly fun by Chapter 3.

I'll have to watch this tomorrow but from what I have seen of this game, which means the QL, I gotta say I'm not impressed. The black bars are really off-putting and the framerate also seemed poor. It's weird for the game really doesn't look that graphically impressive to begin with. This looks like a game that easily could have come out on PS3 two years ago.

Hmmm... Not a particularly great start to the game, it seems. I hold out hope that it improves, based on the quick look, even though Brad made it look awkward. Having said that, Brad makes most games look awkward, bless him.

I can't imagine the higher review scores I've seen are completely unwarranted.

I don't think it was entirely fair to bash the game for saying 'contextual actions,' Mr Klipklop. I realise the tutorial was all over the place, and it was all a bit of a downer for you, but I think you were being a mite harsh about what is now a very well-established term.

Can we have some game related threads where the issue of gamergate is not discussed. It seems that almost every thread is about gamergate all the time.

I'm only an hour into this video, but am I the only one that thinks Patrick is being far too critical of this game?

@learningismagic: I'm with you, in a way. The game seems to have its flaw but, as someone who has no interest in horror game at all, I kinda dig the mood of it. I like the weird and grotesque aestetic, though I feel like I would not like to play the game itself.

Man this game.. I just started playing it on PC after watching this Spookin live. I feel like there's an enjoyable experience there but the crappy aspect ratio and performance hinders it so much. They released the 60fps command code but I'm on a GTX 980 and any open areas the framerate is all over the place from 40-60 and that code for zooming the screen in is not the right way to fix the aspect ratio on this game.

I would probably play The Evil Within if it wasn't for the letterboxing. But I can't stand that, and I won't have a PC that can run it any time soon.

One day I'll buy and play this. No idea when that day will actually come, but I'll still watch this video because goddamn it looks interesting if not totally in a state that I want to play it.

Wow it's so unoptimized that it even chugs on a 980? No wonder the performance is also crap on consoles, fuck this game

Yeah man I only get 60fps in closed off corridors with all the settings maxed at 1920x1080. Everywhere else like outside at the village it's anywhere from 40-60 like I said, probably averages around the 45 mark. The 30fps lock is definitely there to cover up how horribly optimized this game is. I even turned down various options like AA and the framerate did not change.

Wow, the whole time I'm screaming in my head "PICK UP THE BOTTLE AND THROW IT!" This is a video game Patrick, surely you've had to do this exact same thing in other games...

Just wanted to say right at the top of SWS that I could not give a shit about Anita Sarkeesian, and because of that, I have never paid any attention to her. THAT BEING SAID, I'm happy that people like her have a platform to express their opinions, and these fuckin dirtbags of dicks trying to supress that expression using violence, or threats of compromising their personal information is just downright AWFUL, AND UNAMERICAN. I hope law enforcement catches these people sooner than later.

If the university would be okay with it, could she skype into the talk? I would probably call it off too because others could get hurt, but I feel gross about giving into the haters.

I'm playing this on Xbox One. I'm baffled as to why the game doesn't have a smoother framerate. Technically it doesn't seem to be doing anything that couldn't be done on the Xbox 360. Plus its letterboxed... maybe they just didn't have time to optimize as much as they wanted/needed to?

I really hope game developers get a shit ton of negative feedback due to the 'black bar' implementations. Claiming it adds 'cinematic experience' is disrespectful to your consumers. We know that's purely a lie.

Hey, remember when RE4 for the GameCube & PS2 was letterboxed and everybody wrote the game off as awful because it didn't fill up their TVs? No? People thought that game was awesome even though it was letterboxed? Some people even thought that was cool and made the game more cinematic? Weird.

In like 15-20 years, Patrick is going to make an incredible NPR host.
