The Evil Within Isn't Far Off Now

I'm still not sure how I feel about this game, but I'm gonna play the hell out of it.

I really want this to be another Wolfenstein: The New Order scenario where nobody expects it to be good but it turns out to be just that.

Their pricing scheme on PC, combined with season pass is nasty though.

Yea...I had high hopes for this game but I haven't really seen much that has really struck me as being amazing. I'll definitely reserve judgment for when the game comes out but it really seems to me that he's just making RE4 again. Also the game doesn't really look all that good graphically (not saying graphics are everything) and that can definitely ruin immersion if it looks muddy and bland. I'll be getting the PC version so hopefully they have some spiffy textures and effects for the beefier rigs.

Yes, you are right, wow. Wait for some reviews, maybe a price drop of some sort.

@hassun: Pricing scheme? Looking it up it's going for £25 at retail, is it higher elsewhere or is it the low price that's worrying? But yeah Season pass's are getting a little out of control.

@wampa1: Check the MSRP on Steam. $/€59.99 for the game and another $/€19.99 for the season pass.

Good old Bethesda and Blizzard just LOVE to charge $/€60 for PC games.

I expect it to be good...

Jackie Earl Haley at the very least sounds like he's doing a pretty fine job as Ruvik. Though given his previous roles, it should come to no surprise that guy can so naturally play a creepy son'bitch.

On the surface it may look like another RE4, but the overall visuals and aesthetic are clearly going for something rooted in something that's trying to be much more unsettling. Just judging by the trailers alone RE4 seems awfully tame when compared to the amount of grindhouse madness in this.

Wait so it's at a discount price on consoles but it's €59.99 on PC? Sounds like they're asking to be pirated.

I'm excited to play this, although I'm not sure I can be scared by survival horror games that are so forward about taking place in a dream world. I mean what are the consequences?

@hassun: It seems I'm getting a slightly better deal in the UK (compared to Blizzard's usual trick anyway).

D3 was £49.99 at launch on PC (Parity with AAA console game), whereas Evil Within is £34.99 on Steam. That's actually cheaper than Dark Souls 2 was at PC launch (£39.99), yet there didn't seem to be any fuss made over that. Again, maybe the UK was the odd one in that situation. I dunno...

I certainly wont be pre-ordering, as I won't be taken for a mug, but if the game turns out to be as good as I would like it to be (dat macabre!), I'll be happy to put down the full price for it.

RE4 play style + buckets of gore = win... hopefully...

Anything published by Bethesda deserves to have some amount of caution, but considering Mikami's last games were Vanquish, God Hand, and RE4, I think I'm sold even if review scores are scattershot.

I really just hope the last gen versions aren't janky downgraded ports of the PS4/Xbone versions. I haven't really seen any hands on previews of those versions, its almost exclusively PS4 gameplay.

@zippedbinders: Shadows of The Damned was his last work, actually... which, well, I didn't think the gameplay was that game's strong suite. Not to say use that as ammunition against The Evil Within, as I more than anyone am hoping this succeeds in what it aspires to do. Just saying.

Besides, I'm not coming to The Evil Within for taut gameplay anywhoo.

what is it that you don't like about it? Looks fine to me, especially with all the diverse monsters making small appearances in these trailers. Sure it's not the same as last of us but it's pretty damn good IMO

I'm more in it for the atmosphere, the disgustingly gorific visuals, and (hopefully) dat survival horror gameplay! I wouldn't be opposed to the game also happening to control really well and having some satisfying shooting behind it, but it wouldn't be the end of the world for me if the gameplay happens to be kinda janky.

@yummylee: That's fair enough. Just personally I would be pretty bummed if the dude who made Resi 4 went on to make a game that looks almost exactly the same as it but played significantly worse.

Well, that's kinda what Shadows of The Damned was :P It had a different aesthetic and all, but it was very clearly trying to emulate an RE4-esque style of gunplay. And as mentioned before, I don't think it was Mikami's finest work to say the least.

This game has finally got some good buzz around it. Looks like they hopefully fixed the numerous technical issues in earlier builds, and that it's a good game.

Actually, Shadows of the Damned is a strange thing. Mikami's role was "Creative Producer", while Massimo Guarini was the actual director of Shadows of the Damned, and Suda51 as "Executive Director" and writer. I don't think Mikami had any more to do with the direction of that game than telling people to "do a better job".

I mean, if we want to start counting Producer credits for things, might as well count Phoenix Wright, Viewtiful Joe, and Killer 7 too.

@zippedbinders: Huh, I always thought he was the top dog behind the game. Still, he was definitely pretty high up on the ladder and had his hand in things. But I guess you're right, Vanquish was likely his last game where he was undoubtedly steering the ship until The Evil Within.

Psychobreak.

Even if the game's brilliant, it could have been way better in the West.

Virtually everyone who played the version of it at the last two pax's went in with good expectations and came away from it wanting nothing to do with the game due to some really terrible core mechanics, so. Game unfortunately looks like its gonna be shit. Least there's the hopefully good upcoming Silent Hill game in the future.

As someone who played RE4 only last year, and loved it so much I decided to do it again in Pro mode, I am looking forward to this. Unfortunately, the stupid pre-order price of $80 on Steam means that I'll be waiting for reviews. Good thing the pre-order bonus isn't all that great.
