I must have some OCD in me, I wouldn't be able to sit amidst those boxes without at least trying to align them with each other or stack them neatly someplace. I'm old enough to remember playing that Atari 2600 Star Wars game, the thing I most remember about it is how sore my hands were after using that joystick for extended periods. I never played the Superman game but clearly I didn't miss much. I sorta remember a Spiderman game that I liked but that could be faded memories.

So yeah, people in fact are going "YEAH! TUROK!" here in the year 2015. Being entirely divorced from N64 nostalgia, what the fuck is wrong with people? That's among the worst opening level design I've ever seen in my life. The first level in a shooter should be tight and concise, not whatever kind of meandering, drawn-out, aimless mess that was. Holy crap. And people in the Steam reviews are saying such slander as that if you're a fan of games like Doom or Quake you owe it to yourself to play Turok. Insane-talk.

It looks fine. Slow-motion in a game that came out in 1997 is pretty fucking impressive.

Seeing water rendered on a Sega Master System is a strong memory of my childhood, it's always so insanely blue and sharp looking.

Sadly Jeff hit the nail on the head with how First Assault kinda misrepresents ghost in the shell overall. The actual franchise is rather vibrant and full of color in the more modern incarnations yet still works within a more realistic color palette but not one that is constantly brown/grey like this game is. Its one of those very self serious anime that can get pretty damn pretentious but it still has moments of levity and humor.

Essentially Dues Ex Human Rev and its sequel are probably the two closest things to how a GiTS game "should" be done. But perhaps in entirely third person with a few more batman-esc traversal elements and so on would be how I'd ideally like to see it interpreted in game form. A cover shooter at least would be a better use of the license than an fps certainly. Motoko, the lead lady is a very acrobatic and athletic character with super human strength due to being 99% cyborg. So she wouldn't merely go around shooting fools.

Alternately, some kind of tactical squad GiTS game would make sense, like an XCOM/Shadowrun/Satellite Reign sort of thing. It could at least show off the diverse capabilities within the fictional setting.

Agreed that a pretty standard multiplayer-only Call of Duty clone seems like a misuse of the license. This game is as unremarkable as something like Blacklight Retribution.

There's 4 distinct timelines of Ghost in the Shell stuff, but for Jeff I'd probably recommend Stand Alone Complex, 2nd GIG and Solid State Society, which are the two seasons of TV Anime and the TV movie that capped it off.

There's the manga which I seriously doubt Jeff would ever be interested in, the movies which are very pretty but emotionally dull, and the new ARISE series which is just flat out bad.

I'm not sure why, but I feel the urge to give Auralex all my audio baffling business.

EDIT: I'd forgotten that "Elevator Action," much like "Space Invaders" and "Spelunker," is now a Square Enix joint.

An achievement that you wouldn't get I'd you simply spammed out "First" in the first comment. You had to post an actual comment to get it, not just spamming out "first" which is annoying and stupid.

"I don't remember Turok being a key hunting game"

Not? Both Turok 1 and 2 had you hunt for secrets to get the keys needed to reach other levels, I always found it a real dick move. 2 was worse than 1 by having additional objectives like "save all the children" which are also hidden and if you miss any of them, too bad, finishing the level doesn't count, go back to the start.

Oh and I also remember the pre-release talk about Turok 2: "It only uses fog for atmosphere, not to reduce the draw distance". Atmosphere my arse.

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex is a very solid anime series and probably my favorite, as someone who would give @austin_walker a run for Cyberpunk-genre fanboy-ism. (And as someone who is at almost-Dan-Ryckert levels of anime-avoidance).

The 1996 movie (which I somehow saw in in a full-fledged theatre) is cool, but pretty preachy in the way a way that a lot of 90's anime were -- you know, the whole "What is God?" "What if Man Becomes God?" "Why is Man so Horrible?" "God/Politicians are Therefore Horrible. Let's get Depressed! Wooooo!" line of philosophical thinking.

In regards to the GiTS / anime-cyberpunky shooter...man. NEOTOKYO° has a HELL of a lot more soul than this.

Just watch Stand Alone Complex for now. If you like it enough to can dig through the movies that follow a completely different timeline.

\m/ Total Annihilation +shootall -- That game is so damn cool. I actually like the water units in that game (you're right, they're usually garbage in RTS) because w/ CC and BT you can build fully functional rogue bases underwater just incase your main one gets destroyed or as a surprise for your opponent.

As much as I loved TA, I rarely played Supreme Commander because my computer was shit when it came out :(.

Edit: Metal maps were my least favourite in TA. Was nice to place metal extractors wherever you wanted, but they are fuuuugly.

I was legitimately afraid for Jeff's health when he was going on about "Sonic 3." I was afraid he was going to have an aneurism. He almost started speaking in tongues at one point.

EDIT: That Tron (non-)endless runner really made me jones for a current-gen port of "Tron: Evolution." An OK game but really nice art style.
