I don't know how a bunch of grown-ass adults are going to sit around here and pretend that there is any song, from the 90s or otherwise, that is worse than Butterfly. That LFO song is a goddamn calamity and it deserves to be held up as worse than the Pest rap and it is STILL better than Butterfly.

I'll still listen to a top 90s playlist because those were my prime radio listening years so I know all the catchy lyrics to the hit songs.

At least it looks like we can all agree that:

1. This is objectively a best songs of the 90s list since most of them are hits.

2. This is the WORST top WORST songs of the 90s list.

As I watch this clapping and screaming, my only thought is I wish I was there to watch this live. What a glorious list. Butterfly is #1 though!

I'm an ignorant European that didn't learn of the existance of Smash Mouth until the internet memes boosted their profile. I guess the international version of MTV didn't give them any airtime over here back in the day.

Hearing that they were Ben's first album and their album was influential enough to inspire a host of other bands to chase the Smash Mouth sound sounds troubling... Were they such a big deal in the 90's? I always thought that they were quite a niche band that managed to get their big song on the Shrek soundtrack and that those childhood memories then made people have feelings towards the band.

Watched the Right Now music video for the first time, I was born 2 years later, and my god never laughed so hard! Its genuinely the kinda fake deep bullshit some pop group would try today (and probably has)!

I can't wait for the continuation of this. There is some truly putrid shit on here, congratulations to all involved!

For the entire last week of the summer of '98, me and a friend sat in my room listening to Korn's Follow the Leader and Rob Zombie's Hellbilly Deluxe on repeat while playing Wargames Defcon 1 pvp on PS1. I'll still vouch for the Zombie album, at least.

The Fact that no Ska song was at the front of their minds as one of the Worst songs of the 90s makes me a little bit happy. It will most certainly come up eventually, but I'll take this as a small victory.

Man, say what you will about Everlast, but that song displays an empathy for the common folk that was severely lacking in media from the 90s.

I saw Deep Blue Something live when I was a kid. It was terrible.

Edit: I didn't see them on purpose. It was a "surprise" concert in the park.

Achy Breaky Heart had a Brazilian version in the 90s by one of the most famous local country group at that time.

It is a piece of shit too as you can assume.

Cherry Pie is so much worse than it’s position on the list and seriously needs to be reconsidered.

I know this is all subjective list but Cherry Pie not even being in the top five just fucking breaks it.

Macarena is a war-crime calibre song, @jeff ! If you were in high school or middle school when it was out like I was, you'd understand!

Thankfully, one of my suggestions ended up being #1 here, despite the lack of the aforementioned trueWorst Song of the 90s.

I disagree with Jeff about covers. He paints it as a pointless endeavor given that all songs are just a click away. Why not just listen to the original in that case?

I think it's cool for artists to give a nod to the artists that inspired them or that they want to big up a bit for some reason. And it could help to introduce a bunch of people to a new band to explore. Pretty sure i heard covers of Joy Division before i started to listen to that band. Not everyone is going out of their way to listen to The Corrs in 2020, but a Caroline Palochek version of Breathless might be that spark that makes people check it out.

Especially now that the information is so readily available, the grimy aspect of who created the song is mostly not a problem anymore. You don't often see the slight of hand trickery aspect of coversongs back in the day where you always assumed that this one artist actually created this super popular song, only to find out years later that some guy in Italy sang the original version.

Ben & Brad are clearly the Dota players in the room. They know that the keychange in 'My Heart Will Go On' is that much better if you experience the whole thing from the start. You need to be in it for the longhaul!

@pocketmon: Your have Aerosmith Cryin' in the wrong place. Should be above Livin' La Vida Loca. If you search for My Console(above Counting Blue Cars), there is a album radio edit you are missing and also missing Dur dur d'etre Bebe at #2.

Thanks for the list!

As an addendum to this pod I HIGHLY recommend everyone check out this Woodstock '99 power hour, featuring Bryan Quinby of Street Fight Radio who was actually there. There's a couple of really questionable songs but I think the worst is either "Baby's Got Sauce" by G Love and Special Sauce or the House of Pain cover by Everlast (with out of tune guitars).

And maybe its just 2020 but I have grown to have unironic appreciation of certain songs by both KoRn and Limp Bizkit. Sorry Jeff.

This isn't the first time he's said it, nor the first time I've reacted to it, but Alex saying Uptown Girl is horrible just boggles my mind.

LOL, I actually was listening to Astro Lounge a few months ago, for the first time since it came out pretty much. And I was thinking, "huh, this Then the Morning Comes song is pretty ok" because I hadn't remembered it. And then they trash it here... lol. I don't consider myself a Smash Mouth fan or anything - I don't think I've heard a single song of theirs outside of Astro Lounge, except the I'm a Believer cover that was in Shrek, I guess. But Astro Lounge is definitely a time and place sort of thing for me.

I have the Eiffel 65 Europop album, and yet I don't think I've ever heard that My Console song. What

Special mention to Wild Wild West for featuring a baby Jaden Smith cameo on the album version track.

Breakfast at Tiffany's is an objectively stupid song, but I love it because of that.
