A big reason for people to care about excess CPU usage is battery and heat. Many people game on a laptop and using the extra CPU will first drop battery life in half and it will get so hot that it will throttle down (both CPU and GPU) and make the game run horribly.

I was at the FullIndie conference a few weeks ago and a Steam guy in charge of developer relations gave a talk.

Basically, the issue with Steam curation boils down to Valve not wanting to hire any curators. That seems to be their line for now -- they emphasized the small size of the company (something like 250 employees?) as an excuse, which from the outside sounds like a big fat joke, considering the amount of money Steam moves and the fairly sizable cut Valve gets from each and every sale.

They seem hellbent on peddling their Silicon Valley-infused automation fairytale land for now. I hope they don't find the whole issue blowing up in their faces in the future, because it seems a bit bleak.

The uninformed analysis of the Assassins Creed DRM performance impact was difficult to watch. I'm also not a computer engineer, but I know what I don't know. If you're going to do a technical segment, I would expect the technical knowledge and research of the subject being reviewed. I know it was just an unprofessional Friday segment and not an official feature, but as someone who hasn't played Origins, I'd rather you just talk about the game (a mention of the DRM is fine too). Just bring a game you enjoy, play and talk about it.

@scorched: Agreed, way too much time spent on uninformed talk about stuff that anyone interested would get a much better idea of researching online instead of getting nothing out of the conversation. Unfortunately some members of the staff don't realize this and keep going on and on.

I'm looking forward to renting Battlefront 2 for the campaign.

Jeff is absolutely spot-on about how the campaign will see the characters eventually defecting. I mean...look, the Empire are fucking genocidal space fascists and it's not subtle. Even if you ignore all of the EU stuff (in which the Empire is truly monstrous), they are shown literally blowing up planets in the movies. The current unified canon has taken steps to show that the Empire (and subsequent First Order) isn't as blatantly misogynistic as the Empire of old, but I'm pretty sure they're still shown as largely racist. Eventually, there's going to be something that Inferno Squad does that crosses the line for the characters, and is intended to cross the line for the players. You can get away with a certain degree of sci-fi racism--a mission to wipe out a colony of Twi'leks isn't the same as a game about a real world army eliminating an analogue to a real-world civilian population. But if this game's campaign is supposed to end during the time that The Force Awakens takes place...I would find it surprising both from a general story standpoint, and from the standpoint of the types of stories that Star Wars media is trying to tell.

I, uh, have a lot of thoughts about Star Wars.

Interesting watching them talk about the DRM stuff in AC:Origins. But one thing I think they're forgetting is how this affects streamers. When the CPU is firing on all cylinders like that constantly just to play the game, streaming software (something that relies on decent amount of CPU resources) is going to have a real hard time trying to encode that stuff for a stream. Something that a lot of streamers are running into when trying to stream the game.

Some solutions involve having a dedicated streaming PC as well which is fine but also expensive. Then there's using hardware encoders like NVENC or Quicksync but then you have to use more bitrate to get the same quality as a software encoder which is what a lot of streaming software defaults to.

Same. It came with the Packard Bell we had when I was a kid, and I played a ton of it over the other random games that came with the PC. I always wished I had a joystick since it seemed like best alternative to the terrible mouse controls and lack of real acceleration controls on keyboard.

And for anyone else curious, the first game totally had that same guy doing cheesy FMVs.

@bladeofcreation: Normally I'd agree with you, but after reading the novel tie in to the game I have to bet that this is going to be the one time where they subvert the expectation of an imperial defection. Without spoiling any of the novel, the members of Inferno squad are all in on the side of the Empire. I have to believe there are some actions that you choose to take in the name of an ideology that can't really be undone. If they do follow that old trope of the defection to the Alliance I would be greatly disappointed. It would be incredibly out of character based on what was written about these characters in the novel, which was surprisingly good given that it is a Star Wars video game novel.

@fixerofdeath: Thank you for reminding me about this novel! I need to check it out.

Have you read Tarkin? It was excellent and it did a great job of explaining Tarkin without apologizing for him. Tarkin is an unapologetic monster, and the novel walks this line that makes that clear without ever justifying his actions.

Ben was spot on with calling that last game an asset flip. That specific asset pack is used by tons of spam games on Steam.

The lack of curation on Steam is just straight up embarrassing at this point.

At least with Sony, the dogshit sometimes makes it through, it's more of an exception, whereas with Steam, the dogshit is most of what shows up on Steam every day.

The complaints about Steam is so overdone and trite at this point. The same point has been parroted for years.

Steam was notoriously hard to get onto before, and developers were basically financially dependent on getting on. Meaning developers had games done that just couldn't get onto steam for months, or even years sometimes. The system now is much preferable, yeah there is a lot of shit, but who cares? Its not like any person with a little common sense will buy the complete garbage that gets on there. Just like you won't go on Amazon and buy some of the shit that is on there. At least Steam has a super simple refund policy that works quick and across the board. Its a non-issue, that frankly starts to seem silly to bring up again and again.

Really have to compliment Rorie here for being able to talk about the Origins DRM stuff, show off FPS numbers by running around AND still play the game. Not an easy thing to do, and we so often see Quick Looks that have the guys running around in a circle while they set the video up before actually starting to play.

Kudos Rorie! As always you're a treat to have on the show.

I chalk it up to Ben not ever being a PC gaming guy. Anyone that played PC games in the past knows that the first thing you do when starting a new game is going to control options and seeing the 50 specific key binds this game uses because nothing was standardized back then. And yah, times were rough, but it was never rough to the point where you would play a racing game with a mouse..

Too bad Assassins Creed Origins doesn't run on AMD Phenom II Cpu's because of DENUVO DRM. Paying customers are being treated like pirates and can't even get the game to boot. The SSE4.1 instruction set has been removed from many a game, Resident Evil 7, Agents of Mayhem and many others.

The game has the same min requirements as Syndicate which runs fine on AMD Phenom II Cpu's.

Thanks to Rorie for acknowledging that onstream! A lot of people are complaining about it on their forums and they aren't even responding to paying customers.

I agree (in part.)

The new system is preferred by developers that can budget for marketing, which isn't most indie developers. Another way around this is to title your game in a similar fashion as another popular game and price it low, which you could easily do several times a year with Unity asset flips. The latter is effortless. The former is time-consuming and a huge financial risk.

However, an alarming number of developers are expecting people to pay for games that are simply not worth paying for. They are just as much of a problem as developers flipping assets. I realize this sounds a bit blunt, but it's the truth - you can find no shortage of post-mortems by developers who spent long periods of time developing something with the expectation of it selling thousands of copies, only for it to flop day 1. They often blame the flooded market, but the real issue is that the bar of quality has been raised significantly. It's a brutal reality check.

I think more people could learn from the early-to-mid 2000s freeware/shareware scene. GameMaker and Multimedia Fusion were the equivalent to Unity back then, but only a small portion of developers were actually charging money for their games. Putting a price tag on something was a big deal and mostly ensured nobody was going to play it unless the quality was through the roof. Many developers were able to transition into the current market by building a following based on releasing good, free games, something that can still be done now. Having a following solves for part of marketing and ensures you aren't starting from zero.

Holy cow, MegaRace!! I played the crap out of the first game when I was a kid on my grandmas computer in 1993-94. I haven't seen this intro in 20+ years, and watching it now is making all sorts of memories rush back. Total trip.

Hmm, looks like the office GPU is running pretty dang hot. Not like "oops, we fried the GPU" hot but hotter than it needs to be. Maybe install something like MSI Afterburner and set a fan curve?

For reference, mine never gets above 60-ish°F in AC Origins.

Also, to echo both Rorie and others: Sure, I get good performance in AC Origins on PC--hell, great really--but if I, say, wanted to stream, I don't have a lot of headroom for that thanks to the game hammering my CPU. I'm not hitting 100% on all cores but it does get pretty damn close.

the more i hear jeff talk about steam, the less i can rationalize his perspective.

as a content creator whose role is to sift through the muck and find the hidden gems- yes, steam is a mess. but it really is more a sign of the times than anything specific to steam- take amazon.com, spotify, the iOS app store or even netflix- those are all different businesses with different models, but they're similar in as much as you have giant libraries filled with copycat-nonsense.

from a purely utilitarian or functionality perspective- i still friggin love steam. the cloud features (saves, streaming, screenshots, etc) were downright visionary, their discounts (while maybe not as great as they used to be) are still frequent and dependable, their download speeds are best-in-class, and big picture is for the most part great. and by most accounts their refund policy is ok now (i've never used it). heck, i just picked up a steam link for $15 and that seems pretty rad for what it is.

all this is to say- yeah, bummer there's a ton of garbage for sale that valve has no interest in removing. but talk to google, apple, and amazon about their marketplaces. it would be nice if someone could figure this problem out- but i really don't think anyone has- across all media.

@dstopia: One thing i've heard about this is that keeping a low number of employees gives them specific tax benefits that they otherwise wouldn't have, so it's in their best interests to not hire more people?

I can't currently confirm this, but given Valve's record over the last 3-4 years with the things they've done I'd consider this a potential factor.
