Some one said you attacked our penguin.

What. Not even in the game and this already seems weird.

@jscovic: a lot of people as it turns out. Ark was the top seller on steam for like over a year or something.

I hope they continue this. The map is huge and varied(like larger than a Bethesda game kinda huge) and the game mechanics are pretty deep. Of course that deepness is a result of the devs constantly adding new things instead of fixing any bugs or jank. But, I feel like Vinny could make some quality content with some good open world jank.

This game sucks. A friend and I got this like a year ago, and played for maybe an hour before he died and respawned inside someone else's massive base, which thus locked him in there because he couldn't interact with the doors. It was incredibly unpolished and unintuitive then, and it doesn't look any better now.

Wowzers this is flaming trash.

Played this game for an hour when it first came out. One of the worst games I've ever played.

I'm not sure how much value there is to be found from GB playing complex multiplayer sandbox-survival games if you're going to go in completely blind, turn off the voice chat, and proceed to spend your time goading each other to attack every player you encounter. If you're given a sandbox to play in and all you do is throw sand at the other kids, then you're probably not going to have much fun. Reminds me of watching Dan try to play DnD.

Learning the respawn point was barricaded so the only way out was to die again might have colored their view on how the community usually interacts with each other.

Complex isn't how I'd describe this game at all.

I get that this game looks like trash to 'normal' people, and I guess I agree it does look that way, but I'm not gonna call it trash. It's sold millions of copies, there are lots of people who have put thousands of hours into this game, there has to be something of value here even if we don't see it. Also as entertaining as this stream was, it's not like GB has shown of at all what the game really has to offer, especially the longer term stuff that has keeps lots of people playing. The interaction with other players on the server is a big part of it too. I think ARK is apart of a whole new generation of games that a lot of people just don't get.

Great stream though! As much as I expected, and more!

The UI in this game is a horrendous mess. It seems like 90% of the challenge in this game is just wrestling with that interface stuff.

I mean no offense by this, but that disgusts me. I cringe whenever I see nail chopped right down to the skin.

I'm kind of shocked reading the comments on this thing. Everyone seems to have decided this is a garbage game to be mocked. But I thought it looked cool, and the crew seemed to have fun with it (laughing with it, not at it), knowing that they barely scratched the surface.

Seems weird to me.

I was still confused on what this game is when the stream ended so I jumped around Twitch streams. One was a giant flying dinosaur race, the other was people roleplaying in a cave and then the rest were naked people running alone. I'm still confused.

It's such a good game. It would have been good to have someone who knew something about it to guide them a bit. It's a really open, fun game. I've put hundreds of hours into it and keen to play more. You need to give it time because it's fairly deep and really satisfying. This is the sort of game that you don't need other games for months because this takes all your time in a good way.

Well, you've made your opinion of the game known. And your own perception can influence what you see in others.

But that goes for me, too. So *shrug*

It's a pretty popular game. There's got to be something to it.

@bloody_skirmish: "Bad" by what metric? Do you mean unrefined/janky? All games that are as heavily systems-oriented for their mechanics as this game is are like that. That's the price you pay for granting players freedom. Persistent servers, multiplayer, structure and item crafting, tamable AI pets, walking and flying mounts, PvP, PvE, etc. Minecraft, Rust, Space Engineers, etc are all very quirky, with enough moving parts that your first hour of play is never productive.

To Ark's credit, it has the added benefit of being on the UE4 engine with a modding tool set that's freely available through the UE4 IDE. Games like this are the nearest equivalent in spirit to what PC gaming was like during the 90s. It's definitely not of the modern ilk of games that are built to accommodate a homogenized console+PC general audience.

@lonelyspacepanda: I guess it's actually like ARMA in that way. There are a number of these games that technically belong in very different genres but lots of people use them as a sandbox or jumping off point to make their own weird fun. Garry's Mod too. Even Counter-Strike: Source is similar in this way, you can jump into the server browser and end up playing a game that doesn't involve shooting anyone at all.

Damn ya'll, here I was having a great (albeit sometimes frustrating!) time with this bizarre game that's bringing to mind my childhood obsession with dinosaurs and prehistoric animals - but some folks have decided this game is trash. I didn't think it was trash, but now... Guess I can't enjoy it no more :)

I was slightly interested in this game and watch some more popular YouTubers of it, but it seemed like every video was 5+ hours (of tedium) edited down to the 20 minutes of interesting stuff that happened.

I think the "get"/"don't get it" divide is more a matter of age and younger people having a higher tolerance for games with mindless repetitive tasks that require a huge time investment. See: why a lot of us who liked traditional JRPGs 20 years ago now can't stand them :)

I find it hilarious that Vinny can say "I think there was a monster factory on this" and I immediately know what he is referring to without any second thoughts.
