Viking: Battle for Asgard PLATFORM (PS3, Xbox 360) PUBLISHER (Sega) PRICE $60 ESRB RATING (M for Mature) PLAYERS (1) After Conan and Beowulf I had almost given up on the burly men with swords genre. Luckily, Viking: The Battle for Asgard has come to the PS3 and Xbox 360 to restore my faith in the fact that it should always be fun to play as a human meat grinder. Viking is like a mixture of the God of War and Dynasty Warriors games. Most missions in the game simply involve eviscerating as many enemies as possible in a variety of brutal and gory ways. There are also impressive large scale battles that look great, but are more eye candy than they are challenging. The developers tried to add some depth by adding in sneaking missions and quests for items or power ups. While the item quests work well, the sneaking feels a bit too much like trial and error. You will die multiple times until you find the one or two feasible paths. This can lead to a bit of frustration, but there are only a few sections like this. The world of Viking is mostly an open world consisting of three islands. This allows players to complete most goals in any order they want to. There are many smaller goals that must be completed before larger goals, and this helps add a bit of structure to the game and gives a great sense that you are always working to achieve some end goal. Viking can get a bit repetitive and also suffers from a bit of graphical inconsistency. Still, this ends up being rather minor because the action moves swift enough that you never really stay stuck on one goal or in one area long enough to concentrate on any of these problems. The good with Viking vastly outweighs the bad. It is not exactly a top-tier game, but it is an extremely solid and entertaining title that is sure to please your more animalistic desires. Ninja Gaiden 2 PLATFORM (Xbox 360) PUBLISHER (Microsoft Games Studio, Tecmo) PRICE $60 ESRB RATING (M for Mature) PLAYERS (1) THE QUICK AND DIRTY : Ryu Hayabusa is back and is once again slicing his way through ninjas and demons. The Gaiden series is extremely challenging, and this depth makes it one of the deepest action game series ever made. Incredible Hulk PLATFORM (Xbox 360, PS3, PS2, Wii) PUBLISHER (Sega) PRICE $60 - $50 ESRB RATING (T for Teen) PLAYERS (1) THE QUICK AND DIRTY : This game might not be made by the same developers who crafted the hugely popular game Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction, but they obviously used that game as inspiration. |
