Last week there was a little know indie game that came out on Steam and the Switch eShop called Wandersong. This is a game that doesn't seem like its getting much attention, but I', wondering if anyone here on these forums has played it since it came out?
Wandersong is often described as a puzzle adventure game, but I feel there's a more appropriate description of this game. It has a cardboard cutout look and witty writing that will remind people of the Paper Mario games, but also has puzzle solving and sometime item gathering of an adventure game with rhythm gameplay that shares a similar mentality with Parappa the Rapper (though the rhythm gameplay is far different to Parappa as you don't mash buttons to hit the notes). In this cardboard cutout world you are a singing bard who gets this dream one day that tells him that he can save the world from destruction by learning and singing the Earthsong, which he can only acquire pieces of the song when he talks to the world's overseers (Minor deities in this game's world). But while the story may sound serious, its actually a very whimsical and good natured adventure game. Many of the characters you talk to have funny and charming dialogue that it gives you the urge to continuously talk to them to hear more on what they have to say. You'll meet various quirky characters from a witch who accompanies you throughout your quest yet has a great disdain for your positive attitude to pirates whose jobs are to supply towns with coffee beans. Sometimes their dialogue can serve as essential hints on what you have to do to solve a puzzle or complete a quest like any good adventure game would. But as you talk or walk around the world, you can sing out certain dialogue choices when speaking with someone or you can sing freely during a cutscene. There's even a dedicated dance button where you can dance while traveling around an area or in the middle of a conversation.
The rhythm gameplay is based on the Right Stick on the Switch where you point the right stick in 8 different directions. Early on you have to follow the lead of NPC's and enemies as they give you directional cues for you to move the right stick (say a ghost will move up, then left, then down). You follow those directions precisely in order to advance in the puzzle, but don't roll the stick onto the upper left or lower left in this sequence or you'll have to do the cues again. The rhythm gameplay isn't just for following again songs though, as you will have to sing specific songs by following certain notes that you need to move the right stick towards to hit the right notes. There are even platforming sections where your singing voice can manipulate the environment around you to clear these sections.
Wandersong isn't a very challenging game so if you're someone who wants a tough game, this isn't it. But if anyone here wants a nice, breezy adventure game with rhythm game mechanics, Wandersong is a really nice game. I've certainly enjoyed it so far and am aiming to beat it soon. If anyone else has played this game, post here to talk about your experiences with it. Here's a trailer for the game:
