WARP Review
WARP is an XBLA title in which you play an alien named Zero. You've been captured by humans and they are trying to run tests on you, another a number of other aliens. You have to not only escape but find what you've lost, and rescue another alien that seems to be able to talk directly in your mind. The humans won't make it easy though as they will try to gun you down on sight. If they can't control you they will destroy you.
Graphically you can see that the Unreal engine is used rather nicely. You're a orangish blob with two feet, 2 hands, and of course antennas. The majority of the interactable items and humans are of a generic look, but there's just enough variety to keep it interesting. At times I almost felt like I was playing a shadow complex type of game, but that's probably because of the graphics engine. With the base being underwater there's not a whole lot of variety, but you could tell that the artists wanted to make sure people understood it was underwater with a few random sea life moving around in the water.
When it comes to the sounds of the game you're not going to see a whole lot of variety. Just like the character models there's not a whole lot of difference between different things. All the scientist sound the same, all the soldiers sound the same, and so on and so forth.
The controls are the one thing that I never quite mastered in the game. To me they were slightly a bit too loose, when percision was needed, and then there were times where I needed to spam the A button and it didn't feel like the game was really keeping up with what I was trying to accomplish.
Overall this game definitely had me hooked early as I regained my powers and learned what type of interesting things I could do in the game. My favorite action has to be jumping into a human's body and making it explode. It is disgusting and I shouldn't have enjoyed it, but I just couldn't get enough of it. The problem with the game is that it starts to break down near the end. The mini-map is nice, but can sometimes be very misleading and will leave you wandering around in already explored territory for a good amount of time. There was also a glitch late in the game when it came to the submarine. For some reason when on different floors your object indicator was in different spots, I of course didn't realize that and tried for 3 hours to try to get to where the indicator told me I needed to go, without any success. It took me getting beyond lost and pulling up the map when I was on a different floor to find that I was going at the wrong area. Then there was the final battle, which I felt was probably the sloppiest part of the whole game (don't worry I won't spoil it for you, but if you end up playing this game, don't tell me I didn't warn you).
If you're looking for a good arcade game and you don't mind some flaws, then definitely check out this game. The game is selling for 800 MS in the marketplace, currently. I personally think that this might be one of those games, for many where you'll get to a certain part (not the end) and just say "I'm good with where I'm at", and never play the game again. With that said I have to give this game a 7.1 out of 10.
