Napoleon Bonaparte was born on August 15, 1769 on the island of Corsica, which had been transferred to the French Empire the year before by the Republic of Genoa.
HIs father, Carlo Bonaparte, was an attorney who served as a representative to the court of Louis XVI. His great family connections allowed him to be enrolled in a religious school on mainland France and then attend the military academy at Brienne-le-Chateau.
