Fire at Will! is a re-telling of the Top Gun movie but Merlin is used in place of Goose as Maverick's radar intercept officer. The pair help Cougar land his plane on the carrier at start of the story instead and Merlin never perishes when they are sent to compete in Top Gun. James Tolkan reprises the role of Commander Jardian but his callsign is changed to Hondo, while the game's Iceman surrogate is given his Stinger callsign from the movie. Another breakaway from the Top Gun lore is identifying the enemy countries Russia, Cuba, North Korea and Libya.
This story is continued in a sequel titled Top Gun: Hornet's Nest was released in 1998.
