Overview
Challenger is a Hudson Soft game developed for the Famicom. The opening stage, in which the player has to rescue a heroine from a villain in a moving train, was inspired by a ZX Spectrum game named Stop the Express; however, the rest of the game is unique and presents an Indiana Jones-style adventure through caves and ruins with a fedora-sporting hero.
Challenger presents numerous different scenarios with different perspectives and rules, which was somewhat impressive for its time. As well as side-scrolling platformer action stages like the opening train level, the game switches to a top-down shooter for its overworld areas and static screen platformer areas for its many caves. The game also has an adjustable difficulty meter on the title screen, with a possible sixteen settings. Lower settings reduce the number of enemies.
