Overview
Virtual On: Cyber Troopers, also known as Cyber Troopers Virtual-On and Den'nou Senki Virtual-On, is a 3D sci-fi third-person mecha combat game developed by Sega AM3 and released by Sega (Company) for arcades (using their Model 2 hardware) on December 1995.
Similar to Namco's 1993 game Cyber Sled (Game), Virtual On features one-on-one arena combat in a behind-the-back third-person perspective using a pair of tank-style analog joysticks (the "Twin Stick", with each joystick having a button on the trigger and the top), this time with each player piloting mecha (known here as "Virtuaroids" or "Cyber Troopers").
The game later received two home conversions at the time, one for the Sega Saturn and one for Windows PCs:
- The Saturn version was released in North America and Japan on November 29, 1996, with a European release later that year. It features split-screen multiplayer, with both the Japanese and North American versions also receiving separate online multiplayer releases (Japan getting Cyber Troopers Virtual-On for SEGANET in later 1996 and North America getting Virtual On: NetLink Edition in 1998). The Japanese version was sold alongside a dedicated controller (known as the "Twin Stick").
- The PC version was released in Japan on June 13, 1997 and in North America on September 11, 1997, both of which were designed exclusively for use with specific CPUs at the time (namely those with MMX Technology). The Japanese version also had a separate 3D-accelerated release (for PowerVRcards). This version supports LAN and modem-based multiplayer.
It later received a Japan-exclusive port to the PlayStation 2 (Platform) on October 25, 2007, as Vol. 31 of the Sega Ages 2500 series. This version features widescreen support, split-screen and LAN multiplayer, and bonus game modes (including a super-deformed "Chibi-Chara" mode). It also received a digital release worldwide for the Xbox 360 (Platform) and PlayStation 3 (Platform) on February 13, 2013 (featuring online multiplayer), was included as a mini-game in Yakuza Kiwami 2 (Game), and was included in the PS4 Japan-only compilation Cyber Troopers Virtual-On Masterpiece 1995~2001. It also received multiple sequels, along with several plastic model kits.
Gameplay
The arcade version of the game utilizes special controllers that utilize a pair of tall joysticks, each of which having a trigger and a button on top. Based on the position of each joystick, players move their Virtuaroid around (both with turning and with lateral movement), and perform special maneuvers (such as moving them away from each-other to Jump and moving them towards each-other to Guard). The trigger buttons fire different weapons (with each trigger firing different weapons, all of which have cooldowns, with pressing both triggers at once firing a third powerful weapon), while the top buttons are used for dashing.
