Immercenary, also known as Immercenary: Combat in a Digital World and known in Japan as Perfect World, is a first-person role-playing shooter developed by Five Miles Out (Company) and published by Electronic Arts (Company) for the 3DO (Platform) in North America in March 1995 and in Japan on September 22, 1995.
Set in futuristic 2004, Immercenary is set in a world where humanity is jacked into a virtual reality network ("Perfect") and cannot leave, engaged in a game where all participants ("Riithms") battle each-other for survival before their real-life forms wither away. As the fifth in a line of operatives jumping in-and-out of Perfect, players are sent into the network's core (the "Garden") in order to become powerful enough to shut it down.
Along with its cyberpunk "virtual reality" theme, the game is known for its non-linear open world and leveling-up elements, as players grind against opposing Riithms to boost their "Rank" and improve the capacity of their three powers (Defense, Offense, and Agility) while fighting each of the 11 sub-bosses in any order. It also features live-action full-motion video, both with cutscenes and with dialogue trees in the game's neutral hub ("DOAsys").
Each of the controller's main three face buttons (A, B, and C) is customized through the pause menu with the following actions:
Multi-use items (each having infinite ammo) are shown as solid billiard balls. Other than the Default and Map, multiple copies can be picked up so they can be retained on crash.
Single-use items are shown as striped billiard balls.
Players start each game with the Default and Map algorithms, along with a single use of Annaballs, Ashflay, and Chaff.
