    Deathmatch Classic is a multiplayer-focused sci-fi first-person shooter developed and released by Valve for the PC on June 7, 2001 (as a free mod for Half-Life). It was later made a standalone downloadable retail product with the release of Valve's Steam storefront (on September 12, 2003).

    Made (with permission) as an official tribute to the multiplayer mode from id Software's 1996 game Quake, Deathmatch Classic plays similarly to its source material (as the game's GoldSrc engine is heavily based on Quake's engine) and includes recreations of Quake's weapons, maps, and items. It also includes some assets from the original Half-Life, such as the lambda symbol (replacing Quake's "Q fork" symbol), the crowbar weapon model (replacing Quake's handaxe), and numerous player models from Half-Life Deathmatch.

    The original version was also included in all pre-Steam updates for Half-Life since its July 11, 2001 patch (1.1.0.7). While the Steam version was sold separately from Half-Life, it was an included bonus when locking a CD-key of a GoldSrc game to a single Steam account. The Steam version received support for Mac and Linux platforms on July 31, 2013.

    The original release came with re-skinned versions of the following five Quake levels:

    • dmc_dm2 (based on DM2: Claustrophobopolis)
    • dmc_dm3 (based on DM3: The Abandoned Base)
    • dmc_dm4 (based on DM4: The Bad Place)
    • dmc_dm6 (based on DM6: The Dark Zone)
    • dmc_e1m2 (based on E1M2: Castle of the Damned)

    It was later updated in the September 19, 2001 Half-Life update to include the following two levels (one of which is instead based on one of the mapper's earlier Quake maps):
