Overview
Utawarerumono is a visual novel that includes strategy RPG segments developed by Leaf for the PC as an eroge title on April 26, 2002. The game follows the adventure of an amnesiac hero named Hakuoro who befriends a village of animal eared people after a young woman from the village named Eruruu nurses him back to health. Hakuoro, indebted to the village, begins helping to defend its people from ever growing threats all while trying to undercover the mystery of his past and the horned masked that is permanently attached to his face.
Flight-Plan later collaborated with Aquaplus to ports Utawarerumono to the PlayStation 2 in 2006 which eventually released for the PlayStation Portable in 2009. These ports removed all the adult content as well as expanded the RPG gameplay and story. Utawarerumono was also adapted into several different forms of media including manga, audio dramas, and a 2006 anime television series. Over a decade later, Aquaplus produced a sequel to Utawarerumono called Mask Of Deception in 2015 which was followed by Mask of Truth in 2016. Shortly after the sequels were published, an enhanced port of the original Utawarerumono called Prelude to the Fallen was also released in 2018 which recreated the battle segments to be more like the Mask titles.
English Release
Aquaplus never published the original version of Utawarerumono outside of Japan but an unofficial English translation patch was created by a fan group named Mirror Moon in 2008 that translated the PC game. After Utawarerumono's sequels were released by Atlus USA in 2017, NIS America localized the Prelude to the Fallen remake in 2020. This marked the first time a version of the original game had ever been officially released into English.
