The basic game play of Puzzle Dimension is simple, move the ball through the level to the exit while collecting the sunflowers. There are 100 unique puzzles to be solved; progressing through each level dynamically changes the visuals and audio. The music reacts by transforming to crystal clear from chiptune style music.
The PC (Platform) and Mac (Platform) versions were the first supported platforms. A PSN version was later released on June 28th, 2011. There are also plans for iPad (Platform) and mobile versions. Puzzle Dimension is currently available as a digital download via Steam (Concept), but will be available on other services eventually.
Puzzle Dimension runs on the Traktor engine, which is Doctor Entertainment AB's in-house engine.
Collecting all the sunflowers in a puzzle activates the exit portal, which must then be reached to complete the puzzle. Each puzzle level is made up of square tiles, connected in flat layers, at angles, or free-standing. The player controls a ball by rolling or jumping, though movement is constrained to forward, back, left or right; there is also no air control or cancelling movement. Gravity is always downwards relative to the ball, with the level rotating around the ball as it moves; moving off a tile into an empty space causes the ball to fall downwards, failing the level if there are no more tiles below. To assist in planning and avoid accidental failures, the camera can be rotated around the ball, and a free-camera mode allows viewing of the entire puzzle.
Levels start with all tiles pixelated, which revert to full detail once the player's ball nears them. Though puzzles have no time limit, rapidly depixelating tiles and collecting flowers increases the player's score and multiplier, with an additional bonus added for depixelating all tiles.
The game includes four visual themes: Original, Modern, Nature and Underwater. These alter the appearance of tiles, dangers and background effects, but have no effect on gameplay.
Tiles are two-sided, with puzzles often involving travel on both sides. Tiles may also have various obstacles or dangers on them, which may affect one or both sides.
The first several clusters introduce new types of blocks. The last several impose other challenges - Bends and Flat have complex maps of that shape, Revisited contains more complex versions of previous puzzles, and Mix and The End contain the hardest puzzles. Within each cluster the puzzles must be played in order, and increase in difficulty.
Jesper Rudberg (Person) is the main designer behind Puzzle Dimension. He was a founder of the developer Game Design Sweden AB (Company) which created the game Kula World. Fans of that game had been requesting a sequel for a long time so he made a successor to it in Puzzle Dimension.
