    While the amulet of yendor is a reference to Rogue, the gameplay is mostly based on the 1979 game The Wizard's Castle. While randomly populated with objects, traps and enemies, each floor of the castle is based on a set 8x8 grid of rooms which the player navigates in a text adventure approach by typing cardinal directions.
