Stories: The Path of Destinies

Overview

Stories: The Path of Destinies follows the many tales of Reynardo, a sky-pirate who finds himself caught in a loop of death and rebirth as he attempts to prevent the end of the world at the hand of a tyrannical Emperor. The game is structured into multiple branching paths where the player will decide what action Reynardo will take, and typically, a tragic conclusion. Yet with each ending, Reynardo will learn something valuable, and thus, he will dive back into the Path of Destinies in his search for the one path that will save the world.

Structure

Progression

The game is broken up into multiple paths, each composed of 5 levels. Each level typically ends with two decisions the player can take, which will influence the subsequent level they will play as well as the direction of the narrative. There are 9 levels, however their context and narration will change depending on which choices players make. There are 4 "Truths" that will need to be discovered by completing certain paths. Once uncovered, the player will be able to complete the True path, and reach the end of the game.

Gameplay

The game is played from an isometric perspective, where the player has direct control of Reynardo as he navigates levels with light puzzle elements and fights through arenas where he will need to defeat all the enemies before proceeding.

Combat is focused on attacking enemies with a sword, utilizing combo chains, grapples, dashes, and a hookshot to efficiently eliminate opponents. Performing well in combat rewards the player with XP, which will level Reynardo. At each level, Reynardo will gain a Skill Point which can be spent on relearning "lost" techniques at Altars, located within stages.

Players will also be able to craft new swords utilizing materials they find in chests scattered throughout levels. Creating and upgrading swords allow Reynardo to open new doors within levels to find rare chests and alternate pathways, while also granting him magical powers to use in combat, including the ability to set enemies on fire, or heal injuries.

Finding rare chests will also reward Reynardo with magical gems, of which up to three can be slotted into his gauntlet to enable special effects, such as damage reduction and an increased attack speed.
