The game is similar to a text adventure, with the player in a shootout with the villain Black Bart. They start out 100 paces away. Every turn the player can choose to advance, retreat, take cover or shoot. The closer you get, the better your accuracy; but likewise for your opponent.

Most games before Highnoon were hard-coded onto a single machine. This game was available for public consumption by other users of the same server, and was notably popular. As of 2017, there are at least two conversions of the game available to play on the web.
